Our daughters birthday is close to Halloween so to her it has always been a big day and a good way to celebrate her birthday....anyway, we chose when the kids were young to use all the holidays to teach our children about God.  I remember our eldest was scared of anyone (including himself) that wore a costume.  At first we just taught him that we cannot hide from God but as he got older we talked about how the costumes came about because people were trying to disguise themselves so that the demonic forces couldn't harm them but that God can see who they really are because no one can hide who they really are from God.  That way, every time the kids saw something halloweeny they were reminded that they can't hide from God.

And funny story, we let the kids when they were little trick or treat to the neighbors....when our youngest was little, we took him trick or treating...he was so excited (like a dog, he is motivated by food) he would trip over his bag, so I would ask him to let me carry it for him and he would refuse only to trip over it a couple steps down the street...it was so funny.

Our eldest never wanted to trick or treat but he would climb up in the huge pine tree in the front of the house and jump down in front of trick or treaters when they came up in the yard.  Most of the kids loved the "trick".  In fact, after he left and went into the military some of the trick or treaters would ask where the guy that jumped down out of the tree was.

Another fond memory was how many years the kids wanted to make Biblical themed costumes, we have been cherubim, seraphim, Noah's ark, David and Goliath, etc. and all those costumes were amazing creative expressions of their understanding of Halloween.

I'm hesitating to comment on this because I don't want to offend anyone. And I'm not going to judge anyone about this particular holiday. But because of what has happened to me and many others on this day which is a very high Satanic holiday, I have an extremely strong conviction not to celebrate it. I don't want to go into details about it so I won't. But as I said, I'm not going to judge anybody if they celebrate it.

Halloween is what you make it.  For most people, it is a time to have your children fill their bags with candy so they can eat a bit and go to bed happy.

Then the parents can finish off the candy and all is well.

I agree. I think it's harmless. *It's a fun time for parents and kids but you have to check the candy, lol.

when our kids were little, halloween candy was a huge deal because we were poor enough that they rarely got such treats...of course they still prefer fruit but the point is that they got to be treated and somewhat spoiled in a way that we simply couldn't afford to do.

I hate halloween.

Period.

I hate the secularization of Christmas and ..pfft.. easter (even this name is a an honour to a pagan deity)  but there is NO redeeming feature to halloween. There is no Christian overlay at all as it is practiced here in NA.

And it is getting worse and worse.

Extortion under threat is against all good morals ...except if it is halloween. It is totally in service of the god of greed, avarice and extortion. It is not a Christian holiday going wrong - it is a holiday in service to pagan gods which Christianity has not been able to civilize.

The problem as I see it is that we cannot fully isolate ourselves from the evil in this world.  Especially when you have children you soon begin to grasp how much of the world they are absorbing no matter how much you try to combate that evil.  This is why we never painted any holiday as "evil" per say in our children's lives but instead used the "evil" as an opportunity to teach them about God and the good that God brings out of ashes.  The goal is that when they see the evil, the skeletons and witches, they will be reminded that in Christ they are more than overcomers.

That being said, let me remind you that the church at one point used halloween as an opportunity to pray and what a wonderful thing it would be if churches around the world would return to that part of the "celebration of halloween" instead of hiding or judging, they gathered and prayed!
