Re: More thinking, but with Son
« on: December 27, 2019, 06:28:22 am »
My 26-year-old son and I were sitting here sitting hot tea at 11 pm.   He had walked in while I was watching the Mojo top ten philosophers that Mr. Janes posted in this forum.   We were trying to guess who would be number one.   He thought Plato and I thought Kant.  This led to his question of what philosophical school of thinking is based on humans helping/relying on humans.   This led to how we progress through life and how our life's philosophies are affected - he was thinking in the line of Sophist as he understands there thinkings.   That our life and view towards it is based on our fears and anxieties. That is his reader's digest view of it.  Our rational fears and concerns on growing up.   Then in our tweens we start moving towards the irrational fears of our adulthood and we end up in our dotage as Stoics.

Now keep in mind he has taken as many hours in college of Philosophy as me.  In fact, we have had some of the same professors.

So now I have something else to see what we all think on his viewpoint towards growing up in this life.
I think my son would really enjoy talking to you. If you talked to him in person, you would be hard pressed to get a word in edgewise. lol He just can't get enough knowledge. He is continually researching. He is driven to seek knowledge about who, what, when, where and why as it relates to the world around us and even history; what's really going on, who has the real power, what those with the real power are doing, why they are doing what they're doing, how they are doing it, the effect of what they're doing on people, and what their goal is. Knowledge about that is power. People who think for themselves, well, that's just not considered a good thing by those in power.
My son joined this forum but he has very little free time so he doesn't post much on forums if at all at least not right now. I guess that's because he spends most of his free time researching. Some family members say that he's a lot like me. I can't imagine why they would think that. :)

I'm not that familiar with philosophers or philosophical school of thinking. I've heard of Plato and Socrates and Aristotle.

You said that your son thought Plato would be number one. I'll have to do a little research on Plato....The first thing that got my attention is this:
Due to a lack of surviving accounts, little is known about Plato's early life and education. Plato belonged to an aristocratic and influential family.

I'm seeing a lot of disputed claims about Plato. So I'll just leave that for now and focus on what you said about your son. "This led to his question of what philosophical school of thinking is based on humans helping/relying on humans.   This led to how we progress through life and how our life's philosophies are affected - he was thinking in the line of Sophist as he understands there thinkings.   That our life and view towards it is based on our fears and anxieties. That is his reader's digest view of it."

"….what philosophical school of thinking is based on humans helping/relying on humans." Since I'm not familiar with philosophical school of thinking, I don't think that I'm able to say which one something is based on. In general, my thinking is that our life and view towards it is affected by many things and it's different for each of us although we may have some things in common, we are individuals.

I'm more familiar with faith and trust in God. In my life, that has been the basis of humans helping/relying on humans. Helping out of love and compassion for other humans and relying on other humans to do the same.

It is great you can bring your son into your faith and trust in GOD....
Both my sons have strong faith and trust in God. So did my daughter when she was living as well as my husband when he was alive.
Isa. 29:15Woe to those who dig deep to hide their plans from the LORD.
In darkness they do their works and say,“Who sees us, and who will know?”
16You have turned things upside down,..
Isaiah 5:20 Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter.
Eph. 5:11 Take no part in the worthless deeds of evil and darkness; instead, expose and rebuke them.
“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.
