Where is the power?
« on: July 01, 2020, 10:20:03 am »
Some time ago I asked this question and almost lost a friendship over it.

I Corinthians 4:20 20 For the kingdom of God is not in word, but in power.

2 Timothy 3:5 5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.

So where is the power today? Where is the power in your life? In this forum? What would the power look like? Let's talk about the power that God has given to all true believers.

In this dispensation God is silent, behind the scenes. He last spoke to Paul and all of the power we have is explained in Paul's epistles.

so you don't believe we are in the last days?

I do, however we should keep in mind that every generation before us and I mean EVERY GENERATION SINCE JESUS CHRIST has believed they were in the last days. Who decides what constitutes scripture and whom is speaking directly from God';s inspired word? If I have a series of dreams and appear to be righteous on all counts, a man of God and a Prophet no less and I declare that tomorrow, who will believe me in this day and age? The power you speak of and may be seeking is God's Word, Jesus Christ. The power, to me in my understanding is that The Lord Jesus Christ died for our sins and defeated death and sin. We have eternal life AFTER THIS LIFE ON EARTH IF WE BELIEVE. That is POWER - we need to be bold and confident in this.

I believe we can live holy and righteous but not sinless.

No worries...I agree the power is in Christ's death and resurrection and saving grace...but He has also promised to send the HS and that HS is the power in our lives...if we are denying that power, the Heb. passage says we are to be denied as well...iow's the power of the indwelling HS is the power that goes beyond His saving grace and gives us life abundantly in the here and now.

How then do you define "holy" and "righteous"?

I'm not sure exactly but I know I don't qualify, at least I don't believe so. When one's thought is the same as or in accordance with the holy spirit then that is holy and righteous thought, leading to deeds and actions. Also, I see holy and righteous as synonymous really. How can we align our thoughts with the HS? I feel far away from that accomplishment.

First, I believe that righteousness is to be without sin....second, we align our thoughts with the HS through the renewing of our minds...Romans 12:2...we do that through taking our thoughts captive 2 Corinthians 10:5 and put those thoughts on the things of God...Philippians 4:8...Finally, I have a question for you, you don't have to answer it, but at least meditate on is....IF Christ came to overcome both sin and death, how can you believe you will be resurrected into heaven (His power over death) if He hasn't given you the power over sin?  Wouldn't that be His failure to overcome both sin and death power?

I'm not suggesting that we don't give in to our desires for sin, but that His power over sin is as much ours as His power over death is ours if we only tap into that power and use it as He designed for us to do so.

Good morning Lori..Hope you are feeling better today...

I question your last statement in that it appears you are saying the power of the HS is limited by our Free will when He is within us?

Acts 17:11.."These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so."

To a degree it is...else scripture would not command us to yield to Him and to NOT grieve Him...if we have no will, how can we grieve Him?  How can we not yield if we have no will to disobey His commands?

Of course we have free will but the power of the HS is not diminished. It is there, it may not be used but it is there.
