When is slavery freedom?
« on: July 15, 2019, 09:06:39 am »
Some time ago, I researched and wrote a book about the Children's crusades of 1212.  One of the things that really struck me as I did the research was how many of them found freedom from their daily struggles in the midst of slavery.  I carried this understanding over into our spiritual lives in which we are slaves to/for Christ and the freedom we find in becoming His slave/servant.

So the question today is can you see the freedom in being a slave and how does that teach you more about the Living God?

I've experience both kinds of slavery in my life. First, slavery that comes with spiritual warfare and the dark side which was forced on me against my will beginning at a very young age. Secondly, I found release from that captivity and freedom in being a slave/servant for Christ.

Luke 4:16When he came to the village of Nazareth, his boyhood home, he went as usual to the synagogue on the Sabbath and stood up to read the Scriptures. 17The scroll of Isaiah the prophet was handed to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where this was written:

18“The Spirit of the LORD is upon me,
for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released,
that the blind will see,
that the oppressed will be set free,
19and that the time of the LORD’s favor has come.”

1John 3:8The one who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil's work. 9No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God's seed remains in them; they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born of God. 10This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not God's child, nor is anyone who does not love their brother and sister.

2Cor. 4:8For we are squeezed in all things, but we are not strangled; we are harassed, but we are not condemned. 9We are persecuted, but we are not forsaken; We are cast down, but we are not defeated.
2Cor. 4:16Because of this, it is not tiresome to us, for even if our external person is being destroyed, on the other hand, that which is from within is renewed day by day. 17For the suffering of this time, while very small and swift, prepares us great glory without limits for the eternity of eternities. 18For we do not rejoice in those things that are seen, but in these things that are unseen. For things seen are time related, but those things that are unseen are eternal.

John 14:5 Jesus said unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man comes unto the Father, but by me.

John 8:32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."
John 8:36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

The children's crusades of 1212...basically, short version, a couple of children were reported to have heard/seen God tell them to take a crusade of children to take back Jerusalem going on the assumption that the children would win since they were pure.  The end result plays out that many many children died from hunger, thirst, exhaustion and at one point even a storm at sea.  The whole thing was orchestrated by men who wanted to sell the children into slavery.

So when sold into slavery, those children that could read were sold to magistrates and there, they were fed, clothed, sheltered in luxuries that they could not imagine back at home.  IOW's even though they were slaves, they lived better lives then when they were free.  Likewise, when we are slaves to Christ, we live better than when we considered ourselves free.

It's a very interesting story and this is just the highlights
