How strong are you?
« on: April 04, 2019, 11:29:29 am »
As I have participate on this forum I see many people talk about obedience that is our salvation and others talking about how obedience flows out of salvation.

To that end I thought we could talk about how strong we are and where that strength comes from....not just about obedience and salvation but about every struggle that comes into our lives....are we strong enough to endure?  Strong enough to say no to sin?  Strong enough to go an extra mile?  Where does your strength to do these things come from?

II Corinthians 6:3-10 gives us a partial list of things Paul confronted as he asked himself the same question

3Giving no offence in any thing, that the ministry be not blamed: 4But in all things approving ourselves as the ministers of God, in much patience, in afflictions, in necessities, in distresses, 5In stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labours, in watchings, in fastings; 6By pureness, by knowledge, by longsuffering, by kindness, by the Holy Ghost, by love unfeigned, 7By the word of truth, by the power of God, by the armour of righteousness on the right hand and on the left, 8By honour and dishonour, by evil report and good report: as deceivers, and yet true; 9As unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and, behold, we live; as chastened, and not killed; 10As sorrowful, yet alway rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things.

I'm not strong with my will power in smoking cigarettes and other habits that aren't "good" for me. However, I consider myself very strong in my ability to resist satan, evil and sin (temptation). I have no fear of ever being "possessed" or controlled by demons. I could claim the power comes from within myself, and it does but it is the Holy Spirit in me, Christ in me that gives me power and authority.

Amen...PJ

I have been looking into all the things that Paul endured in the Corinthians passage and have been torn between amazement at how much he endured and how many of the things he talks about enduring we have ourselves endured....all in the power of the Living God not in our own strength.  But it also makes me wonder if we trust God enough to endure the things that he did that we haven't.  I would love to think we do but until we are face to face with it, how can we know?

All we can do is pray and talk to God and imagine what we would do. I get a feeling of single mindedness sometimes on a project or a passion of mine. It's like I'm on autopilot but we know that God is in the cockpit with us. So, I imagine that Paul didn't have to TRY to do God's will, he just did. It is only when he reflects on all of the torment, tribulation and suffering he went through do we start to comprehend it all and we stand in awe of all that Paul did. In my opinion, Paul spread the gospel of Jesus Christ, Grace and the purpose of the church more than anyone else who ever lived because it was at the beginning of Christianity, probably the most difficult time in history to convert people to Christ followers.

How true...

So many times we focus on the struggle rather than the God who gives us strength to endure and persevere.

May we remain focused on God and rely solely on Him....amen and amen

I generally don't get it until I reflect back on a day or a week or a year or a decade. Yes, we all suffer. If we focus on the suffering and the struggle and the roadblocks and the resistance to Jesus Christ it leads to despair and feelings of worthlessness.  Do I suffer? Yes. Have I suffered? Yes. So what? Have I suffered more than anyone else? Do my afflictions deserve "special love" or consideration from God? Let's be realistic and keep things in perspective.

No comment Sis, I have a right to remain silent, because anything I say will be held against me anyways.

I agree that Paul was the most powerful Apostle.

He was physically tough - was a bounty hunter
He was very intelligent: Acts 26:24 Now as he thus made his defense, Festus said with a loud voice, “Paul, you are beside yourself! Much learning is driving you mad!”
He was fearless: even before Jesus spoke to him, and we can see he became really bold when filled with the Holy Spirit.

Can't wait to meet him.
Galatians 2:20 (NKJV)
I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.

There is but One Infinite and Eternal God, and since Infinite is borderless, you can't have any other gods besides Him.

God did not die, His son Word did, for you and for me, because - John 3:16

God is not a being, but the Ground of being - Tillich

Yes, I can wait and do my thing here on earth.
