What does Love for God look like?

John 21:15-17 (KJV)

So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs.

He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep.

He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.

In John 21 we see Jesus asking Peter if he Loves Him.  The first two times Jesus asks, He uses the term agape, which is the Love we see in I Corinthian 13.  Thayer Lexicon defines this Love as being well pleased with, content with.  Peter responds with phileo, to like, approve of, to treat affectionately, or kindly.  The third time Jesus asks, the word changes from agape to phileo and Peter's response is still phileo.  As we study the passage, one thing that stands out is that Peter, repeatedly throughout scripture, has a fondness or love for Christ so great that he longs to go with Christ when He talks about His coming death.  Peter is determined to follow, to remain loyal.

Matthew 26:33... Peter replied, “Even if all fall away on account of you, I never will.”   (in relation to the coming denial)

Mark 14:29...Peter declared, “Even if all fall away, I will not.”

John 13:37-38...Peter asked, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.” Then Jesus answered, “Will you really lay down your life for me? Very truly I tell you, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times!

But Peter soon found out that having confidence in the flesh wasn't necessarily the same thing as living out our commitments.  As we see later, Peter denied Christ three times, just as Jesus said he would.  This could be the reason that Jesus ask Peter if he Loved Him.  Love isn't about an emotional response or a mind that is confident, rather, Love is obedience.  Jesus needed Peter to Love Him enough, not to follow Him unto death, but rather to follow Him unto obedience.  Jesus needed Peter to be a shepherd.  Seeing what was coming and knowing what was needed, Jesus asked Peter to obey, to trust that the real Love was not in the following unto death, but rather that real Love was in obeying His commands.  Equally, our Love needs to be based on an understanding and trust of and in the one who knows the things we cannot or do not see coming.

I was just thinking how do we know we love Jesus?

the very thought that Jesus Christ gave His Life for my sins tells me how much He loves ME...

John 15:13.."Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends."

Jesus Christ took this verse to its LITERAL ends..

I don't know what His love looks like but I do Know what it feels like......

So, if Christ's Love for us looks like His dying for us, would our Love for Him look like our dying for HIM?  The problem is, most of us in this country will not be asked to die for Him, so what else would it look like?

After the Rapture of the Church, there will be multitudes that will die in the name of Jesus. To them, His love will look and feel like light on yonder cloud.

what about today, before the rapture...some of the questions I ask, are taken straight out of scripture and yet no one answers from scripture...why?

Well, it's like this. You see something in scripture and then pose a question after you have studied it somewhat. So, you know some of the answers and it's like we should work to answer your questions. It's not always that way but sometimes it is - like we should study when you ask questions.

Maybe, but some of them start with the passage, stated outright (like Blade claims he does with scripture) and still no one will say it.  I get what you are saying, and maybe that is my fault, but many of the questions I ask I haven't studied yet, I just read a passage that spurred a question and no one even says what the passage plainly says.

As to this question, I have repeatedly throughout my time on the forum posted the passage...John 14:15
King James Version
15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.

Lori, I can relate. I know I love people like my mom and dad and family, friends etc. Do I really love strangers, I think I do generally speaking. I love Jesus and I love God and in my mind I think of them as two different persons and the holy spirit is mysterious to me. I have never met God or Jesus and never seen any members of the triune, so how do I love them - Him?

We have scripture but putting those words into our lives and into our hearts and minds and DOING what He commands is easier said than done. We understand what we should do and we have instructions in His word yet we all struggle with being completely Christlike -
