That should bring us to the sifting....

Sifting Like Wheat…

Luke 22:31 is a curious passage.  Jesus is warning Peter that he will betray Him three times before the **** crows.  To begin the warning Jesus says to Peter that Satan wants to sift him like wheat. (Luke 22:54-62; John 18:15-35; Matthew 26:31-35)  The Thayer’s Lexicon says that the word sift really means: Figurative by inward agitation to try one’s faith to the verge of overthrow.  The problem is that the term is only used in this one place in scripture to describe Peter and the betrayal that was coming.  There is no doubt that as a murderer Satan wants to separate us from our faith but that leaves a lot of questions about the account that scripture simply doesn’t answer for us.  For example, how much choice did Peter have being that Jesus knew what was coming?  Was it fear, pride, something else or a combination that Satan used against Peter?  Since Peter immediately weeped upon hearing the **** crow was he even aware of his betrayal while he was engaged in it?  And many more questions we simply have no answers for.  What we do have an answer for is found in Luke 22:32, Jesus prayed for Peter that his faith wouldn’t fall and that when he turned back he would strengthen his brothers in Christ.
Prayer is a very important and powerful thing.  We are told to pray for one another.  (James 5:16; I Timothy 2:1; Ephesians 6:18; Colossians 1:9; Matthew 5:44; Romans 15:30; Philippians 1:9-11; I Thessalonians 5:25; II Thessalonians 3:1; II Corinthians 10:4; Colossians 4:3; I Corinthians 1:4; Matthew 9:38; Acts 12:5; Hebrews 7:25; I Thessalonians 1:2; Romans 8:34)  Even when we don’t know what someone needs we can pray for them and their faith that it would grow and mature so that we can all be presented as mature in Christ.  (Colossians 1:28; Ephesians 4:13; Colossians 4:12)
This prayer for strength in our faith is accompanied by us being able to encourage one another in our faith so that none of us might fall away and harden our hearts.  (Acts 14:22; Hebrews 10:24-25; Hebrews 3:13; I Thessalonians 5:11; Romans 1:12; II Thessalonians 2:16-17; II Timothy 4:2; Acts 11:23; Acts 15:31-32; Acts 16:40; Ephesians 6:22; Colossians 2:2; I Thessalonians 2:12; I Thessalonians 4:18; I Thessalonians 5:11; Titus 2:15) If we are called to encourage one another in our faith it is important to know what kinds of things encourage our faith.  Hebrews 12:1 tells us that witnesses to our faith are an encouragement.  People are watching us and in that we need to live a life that is pleasing to God.  Scripture is an encouragement to our faith and is given to us for that purpose. (Romans 15:4) God has given us encouragement, (Romans 15:5) as does the prophesies that He gives to His people. (I Corinthians 14:3; I Corinthians 14:31)  When we hear of others faith and take confidence in their faithfulness it encourages us. (II Corinthians 7:4)  Maturity in the Lord brings encouragement to our faith. (II Corinthians 13:11)  Encouragement comes from the Holy Spirit, (Acts 9:31) from Christ, (Philippians 2:1) and from the reports of others faithfulness as well as God’s faithfulness to them.  (Philippians 2:19; Colossians 4:8; I Thessalonians 3:7)  When we hear others testify to God’s faithfulness it encourages our faith. (I Thessalonians 4:1) sound teaching, (Titus 1:9) love, (Philemon 1:7) and the unchangeable nature of the Living God all bring to us encouragement in our faith. (Hebrews 6:13-20)

The word of God is a powerful tool in the hands of the believer both for their own protection from the Devil as well as for the unbeliever to turn away from death into life.
Some people conflate the Bible with the divine word. Devil means slanderer, to resist the devil is to resist slander. Truth is an effective defence against allegations of slander.

He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.
Psalm 91:4

I realize the question is not directed at me, but yes I absolutely believe that demons exist.  Not only did I have nightly demonic visitations when I was first saved but I have had the opportunity to be present and be praying during an "exorcism" (don't like that term) Had a friend who stopped by to visit when I was still living at home and he reported seeing demons playing in the trees in front of the house.  Not only that be scripture is written as if demons are real.

What I believe isn't important. There's plenty of evidence of Satanism in today's world. Likewise there's a theological theme relating to a lying spirit (daemons are described as attendant spirits).

I had an experience one time when I was going door to door selling Avon, I think it was. It was summer and hot and I knocked on this lady's door and she invited me in. We went into the living room and she started talking about how she had been seeing her deceased husband actually appearing to her. As she was talking, I felt the temperature drop almost to a chill and she didn't have an air conditioner on. It was warm in the house when I first entered it. And I felt a malevolent presence growing stronger. She was smiling as she was talking and was excited and happy about the idea of seeing what she thought was her deceased husband.

Then she asked me, did you feel that? She was referring to the drop in temperature. I said yes and that we needed to pray together right now. She was disappointed by my reaction. So I started praying against this malevolent presence and before I finished the prayer, the temperature had returned to normal and I no longer felt that bad presence. Before I left, I told her not to seek out that kind of thing again and I told her that wasn't her husband she was seeing. I never saw her again after that so I hope she listened to me.

Yes indeed there is plenty of evidence of Satanism in today's world. More than plenty. I've seen more of that than I care to see and experience in one lifetime. But I won't go into all that. I'll just say that we need to know who the real enemy is and his tactics and prayer is powerful against this. Strong faith and prayer.

One way of looking it is truth vs lies. In this context the devil/slanderer is the enemy.

"resist the devil and he shall flee from you" ~ James 4:7 Interestingly  this verse also talks about submission to deity, which is the central tenet of Islam.

He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth [shall be thy] shield and buckler.

I think we agree that Satan is the enemy. Although some Satanists prefer to be called Luciferians. I see no difference between them. They're the same and equally evil.

Lies…

The story of Ananias and Sapphira found in Acts 5 talks about Satan filling their hearts with lying to the Holy Spirit.  I have heard many people point out that they were lying to the Holy Spirit which was their downfall and in the account Peter points out that they lied to the Holy Spirit and not to man.  What of Satan’s scheme here?  Satan filled their hearts to lie to the Holy Spirit.  John 8:44 tells us that Satan is a liar and has been a liar from the beginning.  If we look at Genesis we see that he lied to Eve.  Throughout scripture we see this repeated Satan is a liar.  When he tries to put lies in our heart it is a scheme of his for the purpose of separating us from God.  Let us go back for a moment to Judas Iscariot John 13:2 (HCSB) Now by the time of supper, the Devil had already put it into the heart of Judas, Simon Iscariot's son, to betray Him.  Before Satan entered Judas, he had already planted the seeds of betrayal in his heart.
The first thing we need to understand about this passage in Acts is that Satan planted the lies in the heart.  Scripture tells us to guard our hearts, to protect them diligently.  (Proverbs 4:23-24)  We are to allow God to create a clean heart where we once had a sinful one. (Psalms 51:10)  We are to store heavenly treasures not earthly treasures in our hearts. (Luke 6:45)  It is with trust in God and our hearts find peace and protection. (Proverbs 3:5-6) Allowing God to direct us, (Proverbs 23:19) and not allow our hearts to forget what God has done and who He is. (Deuteronomy 4:9)  We are to commit our ways to God, (Psalms 37:5; Proverbs 16:3) allow ourselves to be teachable, (Psalms 22:19) walk in God’s wisdom with trust, (Proverbs 28:26) without being anxious. (Philippians 4:6) When we fill our hearts with God and guard them diligently Satan doesn’t have an opportunity to fill our hearts with lies.
Moving through Acts 5 we see Peter saying to Sapphira that they tested the Spirit of the Lord.  They tested God.  In the temptations of Christ we see that we are not to test God so I thought it would be interesting to look at some of the ways the Bible talks about that God has been tested by people.
Acts 15:10; Matthew 23:4 with yokes of the law that no man can bare.
Deuteronomy 6:16; Exodus 17:1-7 by doubting God’s provision.
Psalms 7:18 by demanding the desires of their hearts.
Psalms 78:40-42 by forgetting His power and Love.
Psalms 78:56 by disobedience.
Psalms 106:13-15 by embracing their cravings while forgetting His works
and not waiting for His counsel.
Malachi 3:15 by their arrogance who commit wickedness and still prosper
questioning God’s wisdom.
Matthew 4:5-7 by challenging His promises.
I Corinthians 10:9 by not trusting God.
Psalms 95:8-10; Hebrews 3:9; Numbers 14:22 by hardening their hearts
and not paying attention to the signs given.
When Satan uses lies to try to separate us from God we need to respond by guarding our hearts and minds, with trust in God’s provision and grace and in that trust cling to obedience and in that find victory over the sin that was once our master.

Blindness…

In scripture there are two different deaths that are talked about, the physical death of the flesh and the spiritual death that is that death that is eternal separation from God.  Likewise there are two different blindnesses talked about in scripture, that of physical blindness of the fleshly eyes and that blindness of the spirit in which our spiritual eyes see only darkness as if there is a veil over them preventing us from seeing the things of the spirit.  Acts 26 tells the story of Paul’s conversion.  Paul was a persecutor of the brethren.  Then one day as he and his companions were walking along when a bright light brighter than the sun shone and a voice asked Paul why he was persecuting Him.  The voice was Jesus calling Paul to a life of following Him rather than the life of persecution and sin that was currently living in.  Verses 17-18 (HCSB) I will rescue you from the people and from the Gentiles. I now send you to them 18 to open their eyes so they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, that by faith in Me they may receive forgiveness of sins and a share among those who are sanctified.’  Jesus is sending Paul to the Gentiles so that the veil might be lifted from their eyes, so that the spiritual blindness that they were living in might give way to the light of the Living God.  So that they were no longer living in spiritual darkness which is the power of Satan but now they might live in the power of the light, the Christ whose love is one of forgiveness and sanctification, a setting apart as holy or without sin.  Satan can blind our spiritual eyes but Jesus can give us spiritual sight.
Let’s first look at what spiritual blindness really is.  We talked about it being like a veil that covers our eyes so that we cannot see the things of the spirit.  Exodus 26:31-33 tells us about the curtain or veil that was to separate the holy of holies from the rest of the temple.  In Biblical times this curtain or veil was a very real thing which separated sinful man from a very Holy God.  The holy of holies was the throne room so to speak for God and contained the Ark of the Covenant, also known as the Mercy seat of God.  Because of man’s sins he is separated from God and the curtain or veil in the temple is today a symbol of this separation.  (Isaiah 59:2) Our sins blind us from God or separates us from God whichever way you want to look at it.  There is a curtain or veil between us and God and that is a veil that Satan wants to remain there.
Matthew 27:50-54 tells what happened when Christ hung on the cross and finally gave up the ghost or in other words, died.  At Christ’s death, the curtain or veil was torn from top to bottom giving us direct access to God.  There was an earthquake, and those who were already dead but served God were raised and taken to their heavenly home.  The account in Mark 15:33-41 tells us that before this moment, darkness covered the earth.  Those who are blind live in a darkness void of light.  Spiritual blindness is like a veil over our hearts (II Corinthians 3:15-16) a veil that we need to have removed so that we can see with spiritual eyes.
Spiritual blindness is not reserved only for the unchurched in fact, Matthew 23:23-25 calls the scribes and Pharisees, religious leaders of the day, blind guides.  Those that are spiritually blind are those that are unbelievers or those that have not believed unto salvation.  It is possible to be in the church even a church leader and still be spiritually blind.  (Zephaniah 1:17; Matthew 15:14; Matthew 23:16; Matthew 23:24-26; Luke 6:39; II Corinthians 4:4)
Christ alone can restore our vision, remove the veil, give us spiritual vision.  Like the curtain that was torn when He died, it is Christ that gives sight to the blind even those with spiritual blindness.  He is the light that shines into the darkness and gives sight to the blind. (Isaiah 9:2; Luke 1:79; Matthew 4:19; John 1:5; II Corinthians 4:6; I Peter 2:9; Ephesians 5:8; John 8:12; Acts 26:18; Colossians 1:13; Isaiah 42:7; Isaiah 42:16) The believer that is set free from the darkness of spiritual blindness is also called to live in the light rather than turning back to the darkness from which they were set free.  (Acts 26:18; Isaiah 42:16; Luke 1:79; Ephesians 5:8; I Peter 2:9; Isaiah 29;18; I Thessalonians 5:4-5; I John 1:6)  Spiritual blindness is from within a man not from outside. (Matthew 6:23)  With spiritual sight comes peace. (Luke 1:79)  This blindness is one that man seems to love (John 3:19) and can be deceiving. (Luke 11:35) Whereas Jesus is the one that gives sight to the blind, we contribute by casting off the works of darkness and putting on the armour of light. (Romans 13:12; Ephesians 5:11) In other words, we turn away from our sins and turn to the Christ who clothes us in righteousness.  It is often easy to see the flesh as the biggest problem we have.  Physical blindness seems to be such a horrible thing for many, so much so that they fight it and pray about it and come to despair when it doesn’t go away.  But Ephesians 6:12 tells us that it isn’t the things of the flesh that are our enemy but rather the power of the enemy is the one that brings spiritual blindness.  It is the spiritual battles that are the ones that can bring blindness to our spiritual eyes and that is much worse than anything the flesh can know.  The defense against spiritual blindness is Christ Himself and the power of Christ to give sight to the blind.

another all too common attack is the lack of self control

 Lack of Self-Control…

Satan likes to use our weaknesses against us.  There may be no greater weakness for him to exploit than that of our lack of self control.  Whether that lack of self control is in our sexualality, alcohol, food, or other indulgences we so desire the thing that we are willing to find ways to justify the indulgence and in doing so we play into the hands of Satan to pull us away from God.  I Corinthians 7:5 talks about the marriage relationship and abstaining from sex for a season.  Verse 7 says (HCSB) “that Satan may tempt you because of your lack of self control.”  When we lack self control in our lives Satan sees an opportunity to us that lack of will power to tempt us to sin thus separating us from the giver of Life, Jesus the Christ and the peace and power He gives.
Self control is something that should exist within the marriage as well as premarital sexual relations. (I Corinthians 7:5; I Corinthians 7:9)  The overseer is to be a man of self control. (I Timothy 3:2; I Timothy 3:11; Titus 1:7-9)  But self control isn’t reserved only for marriage and overseers it was preached in the early church, (Acts 24:25) and is to be taught by the older women to the younger and by the older men to the younger men. (Titus 2:3-5; Titus 2:6-8)  Self control is something that we should be working at, training ourselves in and is in scripture compared to the discipline of someone who participates in running for competition or other sports.  Self control is a discipline that is practised for the purpose of being able to do better and better. (I Corinthians 9:24-26)  In the last days people will no longer believe that self control is a good thing and will abandon it for the sensual desires within. (II Timothy 3:2-4)  Peter tells us that we should add to knowledge self control.  In other words, when we gain knowledge of who God is and what He desires of us we should add to that the self control that is necessary to abstain from the sensual desires that keep us from God.  (II Peter 1:5-7) We then should add to self control endurance so that in self control we can finish the race to God’s glory.  The Thayer’s Lexicon says that self control is “the virtue of one who masters his desires and passions especially his sensual appetites”.  This is a beautiful picture of what self control it is a mastering of the sinful desires that we once were slaves to.  Those sinful desires no longer control us, they are no longer our master.  Matthew 23:25 tells us that self control is a matter of inward cleansing not shining the outside of our lives to look good to others but rather allowing the Holy Spirit to work within our lives to shine us from within.  Finally, the self control that we are suppose to live in is a self control that comes from the Holy Spirit thus that can only come to us as we yield more and more of our lives to that indwelling Spirit. (Galatians 5:22-23)

Keeps Us From Forgiving Others…
Sometimes our own feelings can be used against us by Satan.  He doesn’t have to do anything but take advantage of our emotional weaknesses.  Such is the case in II Corinthians 2:5-11 (Luke 11:4) in the body of Christ pain inflicted upon one is inflicted upon all which makes sense if we do back to the teaching of the body.  (I Corinthians 12:26-27)  When we belong to Christ we are never suffering alone.  Because we are never suffering alone it is important for us to forgive those that commit sins against us.  It isn’t just for ourselves that we forgive it is for the entire body of believers that we forgive for.  If we don’t forgive we give Satan an opportunity to take advantage of our hurt, pain, and anger and exploit it in an attempt to draw us from Christ into death.
In some of our previous books we dealt with forgiveness in some depth here we want to talk about how Satan exploits our unforgiveness more so than how to forgive.  It is no secret that we need to forgive.  (Matthew 6:12-14; Matthew 18:21; Matthew 18:35; Mark 11:25-26; Luke 6:37; Luke 17:3-4; II Corinthians 2:7-10; Colossians 3:13)  God alone has the power and authority to forgive sins. (Matthew 9:6; Mark 2:7-10; Luke 5:21-24; Luke 23:34; I John 1:9)
Unforgiveness breeds things like anger, vengeance, hostility and bitterness.  These things can if not dealt with lead to sin.  (Leviticus 25:17; Proverbs 20:22; Ephesians 4:26-27)  In anger we can hold grudges (Genesis 27:41) we can become separated from our brothers and sisters in Christ as well as from God. (Genesis 27:43-45)  Anger can and sometimes does lead to murder even if that murder is only in our thoughts. (Genesis 49:6-7; Deuteronomy 19:6; Job 5:2)  Instead of allowing our anger to escalate into acts of vengeance we need to let go of our anger and allow God to avenge the evil for His judgments are just. (II Chronicles 16:10; Esther 7:6-10; Job 10:17; Job 40:11; Psalms 37:8; Psalms 55:3; Proverbs 30:33; Hosea 7:6; II Corinthians 12:20; Galatians 5:20) Forgiving so that our anger does not turn to sin is an act of the new man, a pleasing aroma to God as we live in and serve Him. (Job 36:13; Proverbs 14:16; Proverbs 29:11; Ecclesiastes 7:9; Ephesians 4:30-32; Colossians 3:7-9; I Timothy 2:8; James 1:20)
Vengeance is something that we should leave up to God. (Romans 12:19; Deuteronomy 12:35; I Samuel 24:12; Hebrews 10:30)  Likewise hate which often accompanies unforgiveness has no place in the believers heart. (Psalms 81:15; Matthew 5:43-44; Matthew 6:24; Matthew 24:10; Mark 13:13; Luke 6:27; Titus 3:13; I John 2:9-11; I John 3:15; I John 4:20)  Hate causes many problems for the believer as does bitterness. (Ephesians 4:31; Acts 8:23; Hebrews 12:15)  Even hostility causes problems for the believer. (Romans 8:7; I Thessalonians 2:14-16)

John 8:44 tells us that Satan is a liar and has been a liar from the beginning.
No, he is speaking specifically of the slanderer, not generally of the adversary.

Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
John 8:44
