The Image of God?
« on: February 05, 2021, 11:15:46 am »
Here are my notes so far...what can you add?
In Genesis 1:26-27, we see God creating man in His image. What is the image of God that man was created in? Actually, this is a more difficult question than it might first appear to be. Since man is the only creation that is said to be in the image of God, let’s look at what image God wants to restore in mankind…

Did the image of God that God put into mankind vanish when sin entered the world? Well, I Peter 1:23; Ephesians 4:22-24; James 3:9 seems to suggest that the image of God remains but is marred and needs to be renewed. How are we to renew the image?

(see the previous study about body, soul, and spirit) God wants to restore to His image, our bodies. I Corinthians 15:50-58; Romans 8:10; Isaiah 40:31; II Peer 1:4
God wants to restore our spirits. II Corinthians 5:21; Romans 8:18-21; Titus 3:5; Ephesians 4:23; Romans 8:10
God wants to restore our essence, the heart and mind from which we identify ourselves as unique and different from all others. Colossians 3:10-12; II Corinthians 4:16; Romans 12:2
This is consistent with the totality of scripture about the makeup of mankind, mankind is made of body, soul, and spirit. I Thessalonians 5:25; Hebrews 4:12
Another important question we must ask if we want to understand what the image of God in mankind is what is the purpose of that image? The purpose of the image is to be a helpmate for God. (Genesis 1:26; Luke 1:75; Romans 7:6; Ephesians 2:10) This also fits the totality of the passages that talk about the church being the bride of Christ. Genesis 2:6 tells us why God created the woman, she was to be a helpmate for the man. Likewise, the above scriptures tell that we are to be a helpmate for God. Just as a bride is to be for her Husband (Christ) (II Corinthians 11:2; Ephesians 5:27; Revelations 19:7) But it doesn’t end there, we are His ambassadors as well, (II Corinthians 5:20; II Corinthians 6:1; Ephesians 6:20) So the whole purpose of man to be created in God’s image was to be the bride that would help Him in the tending of the world He had just created and the spreading His Love to the rest of the world.

I'm still fine-tuning things but here is the next part...
In order to be a helpmate for the Living God who is righteous and holy, (Exodus 9:27; Deuteronomy 32:4; Judges 5:11; II Chronicles 12:6; Ezra 9:15; Nehemiah 9:8 and 33; Psalms 7:11 and 17; Psalms 9:4; Psalms 11:7; Psalms 35:28; Psalms 50:6; Psalms 97:6; Psalms 111:3; Psalms 112:3; Psalms 116:5; John 17:25; Romans 3:21; II Corinthians 9:9; I John 1:9; Revelation 15:3; Joshua 24:19; I Samuel 2:2)

So what part of the image of God was lost when sin entered the world? Both righteousness and holiness were lost when sin came into the world. (Deuteronomy 6:25; Matthew 6:33; Luke 1:17; John 16:8; Acts 13:10; Romans 3:10; Romans 6:20; Ephesians 4:24; I Timothy 6:11; II Timothy 2:22; Hebrews 12:11; II Timothy 3:16: James 3:18; Leviticus 11:44; I Peter 2:4-6; I Peter 2:4-6)

Restoring the image of righteousness and holiness is the only way to restore the image of God to the purpose for which He gave it to mankind. (Psalms 37:39; Romans 1:17; Romans 3:22; II Corinthians 5:21; Ephesians 5:9; Philippians 3:9; Romans 3:25 and 26; Romans 4:6; Romans 5:1 and 9 and 21; Galatians 2:21; Philippians 1:11)

Hi Lori.  Let me add something..

Jesus tells us "He who has seen Me has seen the Father; "(JON 14:9)...Jesus was just the Son of Man at the time He spoke these words. By the phrase "Son of Man" He had not died and been resurrected in His new bodily form. For it had NO BLOOD.

Anyways, as the Son of Man, We see Him we also see the Father (Yahweh)

Wait...are you suggesting that we are the image of Christ as well?  Something I am just starting to add to the study?  Is that the point you are making?
