Should we seek heaven?
« on: December 31, 2020, 06:26:55 am »
A lot of people are seeking heaven, in fact, for years the church has taught that salvation/christianity is all about heaven, but is it?  Isn't seeking heaven a prideful, self centered quest whereas seeking God and our relationship with Him is an outward, pleasing aroma to God act in which we put God above ourselves...you know, Love Him instead of loving ourselves?  Why or why not?

Yes, I agree and we are are also told to keep our minds on things above; heavenly things. It's not that I "seek" heaven but I consider it a gift or a reward for persevering and keeping the faith. Yet too much time thinking about oneself and the glory of heaven is not good either. I used to think of heaven and think of the way it would be, my way how I liked it. Now I just think of worshiping God and praising Him, being in His presence for eternity.

the passage that comes to my mind is in Amos, I know it isn't an exact fit but I do feel like it demonstrates how easily we can confuse our seeking for ones own benefit verses Gods....Amos 5:18

The answer is Yes, In the Prayer Jesus gave us, we are asking for the "Kingdom to come"

I think we have it wrong.  Those that spent their life seeking heaven, strictly in my opinion, miss the point.  The point is to seek Jesus and God.  Heaven is the reward for the journey.  If we spent time putting that journey to heaven above seeking God, then the journey is destined to fail.   If you put them on equal footing and seek both at the same time, again you are destined to fail.  However, again just my opinion, If you seek God, then heaven is no longer something you need to focus on as it will be taken care of by seeking God.

I hope I made sense.

I guess I read the title wrong...alas seeking is the not the same a praying the kingdom of heaven would come. or is it.

"thy Kingdom come" in the Lord's prayer does not mean I am seeking Heaven but rather wanting it to hurry up and get here!   What say you?

I agree with both seeking and waiting eagerly for the kingdom to come. We are not to be caught up in worldly affairs and we are to keep our minds on heavenly things.

33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

1 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ

20 For our citizenship is in heaven, from which also we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ;

26 considering the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures of Egypt; for he was looking to the reward.

3-4 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you

I'm sure I could find more . . .

this reminds me of Amos 5:18 Woe unto you that desire the day of the LORD! to what end is it for you? the day of the LORD is darkness, and not light.

I think there is a difference between seeking and looking forward to or even acknowledging what is coming as in the verse you are referencing.

question...in this passage, is the Kingdom of God heaven or the Christ who says that the Kingdom is here meaning He is the Kingdom?
