Let's talk humility...
« on: May 11, 2019, 09:35:21 am »
Where does humility come from?

Humility is an active choice, we decide whether we will be humble or not, it's an individual matter.
Exodus 10:3...So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said to him, “This is what the LORD, the God of the Hebrews, says: ‘How long will you refuse to humble yourself before me? Let my people go, so that they may worship me.
Jeremiah 44:10...To this day they have not humbled themselves or shown reverence, nor have they followed my law and the decrees I set before you and your ancestors.
Daniel 5:22...“But you, Belshazzar, his son, have not humbled yourself, though you knew all this.
Daniel 10:12...Then he continued, “Do not be afraid, Daniel. Since the first day that you set your mind to gain understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard, and I have come in response to them.

Humility is something we can encourage in ourselves through fasting.
Ezra 8:21...There, by the Ahava Canal, I proclaimed a fast, so that we might humble ourselves before our God and ask him for a safe journey for us and our children, with all our possessions.
Psalms 35:13-14...Yet when they were ill, I put on sackcloth and humbled myself with fasting. When my prayers returned to me unanswered, I went about mourning as though for my friend or brother. I bowed my head in grief as though weeping for my mother.

Humility sometimes comes from our yielding...
James 5:5...In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.”

Humility is a choice, but it is also something given to us by God.
What and how does God humble us?

Sometimes God uses poverty and wealth to  humble us...
I Samuel 2:7...The LORD sends poverty and wealth; he humbles and he exalts.

Sometimes God uses others to humble us...
II Chronicles 28:19...The LORD had humbled Judah because of Ahaz king of Israel, for he had promoted wickedness in Judah and had been most unfaithful to the LORD.
Psalms 18:39...You armed me with strength for battle; you humbled my adversaries before me.

Sometimes God uses the things we think are evil to humble us...
Psalms 107:39-40...Then their numbers decreased, and they were humbled by oppression, calamity and sorrow; he who pours contempt on nobles made them wander in a trackless waste.
Daniel 5:19-21...Because of the high position he gave him, all the nations and peoples of every language dreaded and feared him. Those the king wanted to put to death, he put to death; those he wanted to spare, he spared; those he wanted to promote, he promoted; and those he wanted to humble, he humbled. 20 But when his heart became arrogant and hardened with pride, he was deposed from his royal throne and stripped of his glory. 21 He was driven away from people and given the mind of an animal; he lived with the wild donkeys and ate grass like the ox; and his body was drenched with the dew of heaven, until he acknowledged that the Most High God is sovereign over all kingdoms on earth and sets over them anyone he wishes.

Sometimes God's nature humbles us...
Isaiah 2:9-11...So people will be brought low and everyone humbled— do not forgive them. Go into the rocks, hide in the ground from the fearful presence of the LORD and the splendor of his
majesty! The eyes of the arrogant will be humbled and human pride brought low; the LORD alone will be exalted in that day.
Isaiah 2:12-18...The LORD Almighty has a day in store for all the proud and lofty, for all that is exalted (and they will be humbled), for all the cedars of Lebanon, tall and lofty, and all the oaks of Bashan, for all the towering mountains and all the high hills, for every lofty tower and every fortified wall, for every trading ship and every stately vessel. The arrogance of man will be brought low and human pride humbled; the LORD alone will be exalted in that day, and the idols will totally disappear.
Isaiah 5:15-16...So people will be brought low and everyone humbled, the eyes of the arrogant humbled. But the LORD Almighty will be exalted by his justice, and the holy God will be proved holy by his righteous acts.
Isaiah 13:11...I will punish the world for its evil, the wicked for their sins. I will put an end to the arrogance of the haughty and will humble the pride of the ruthless.
Isaiah 23:9...The LORD Almighty planned it, to bring down her pride in all her splendor and to humble all who are renowned on the earth.
Daniel 4:37...Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and exalt and glorify the King of heaven, because everything he does is right and all his ways are just. And those who walk in pride he is able to humble.

Sometimes God uses faith...
Romans 12:3...For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you.

What is the purpose of humility?

Humility reveals what is in our hearts...
Deuteronomy 8:2...Remember how the LORD your God led you all the way in the wilderness these forty years, to humble and test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands.

Humility teaches us that we are more than just flesh, but we are also spirit...
Deuteronomy 8:3...He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.

Humility shows us where good comes from...
Deuteronomy 8:16...He gave you manna to eat in the wilderness, something your ancestors had never known, to humble and test you so that in the end it might go well with you. 17 You may say to yourself, “My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.” 18 But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today.

In humility the Lord saves us...
II Samuel 22:26-30...“To the faithful you show yourself faithful, to the blameless you show yourself blameless, to the pure you show yourself pure, but to the devious you show yourself shrewd. You save the humble, but your eyes are on the haughty to bring them low. You, LORD, are my lamp; the LORD turns my darkness into light. With your help I can advance against a troop; with my God I can scale a wall.
Psalms 18:27...You save the humble but bring low those whose eyes are haughty.

Humility saves us from God's wrath...
I Kings 21:29...“Have you noticed how Ahab has humbled himself before me? Because he has humbled himself, I will not bring this disaster in his day, but I will bring it on his house in the days of his son.”
II Chronicles 12:7,12...When the LORD saw that they humbled themselves, this word of the LORD came to Shemaiah: “Since they have humbled themselves, I will not destroy them but will soon give them deliverance. My wrath will not be poured out on Jerusalem through Shishak...12Because Rehoboam humbled himself, the LORD’s anger turned from him, and he was not totally destroyed. Indeed, there was some good in Judah.

In humility God hears us...(forgives us and heals us)...
II Kings 22:19...Because your heart was responsive and you humbled yourself before the LORD when you heard what I have spoken against this place and its people—that they would become a curse and be laid waste—and because you tore your robes and wept in my presence, I also have heard you, declares the LORD.
II Chronicles 7:13-15...“When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command locusts to devour the land or send a plague among my people, 14 if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land. 15 Now my eyes will be open and my ears attentive to the prayers offered in this place.
II Chronicles 34:27...Because your heart was responsive and you humbled yourself before God when you heard what he spoke against this place and its people, and because you humbled yourself before me and tore your robes and wept in my presence, I have heard you, declares the LORD.

In humility God guides us and teaches us...
Psalms 25:9...Good and upright is the LORD; therefore he instructs sinners in his ways. He guides the humble in what is right and teaches them his way. All the ways of the LORD are loving and faithful toward those who keep the demands of his covenant. For the sake of your name, LORD, forgive my iniquity, though it is great.

In humility God sustains us...
Psalms 147:6...The LORD sustains the humble but casts the wicked to the ground.

In humility God crowns us with victory...
Psalms 149:4...For the LORD takes delight in his people; he crowns the humble with victory.

In humility God shows favor...
Proverbs 3:34...He mocks proud mockers but shows favor to the humble and oppressed.
Isaiah 66:2...Has not my hand made all these things, and so they came into being?” declares the LORD. “These are the ones I look on with favor: those who are humble and contrite in spirit, and who tremble at my word.

In humility we will rejoice...
Isaiah 29:19...Once more the humble will rejoice in the LORD; the needy will rejoice in the Holy One of Israel.

In humility we will be exalted...
Matthew 23:12...For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.
Luke 1:52...He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble.
Luke 14:11...For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”
Luke 18:14...“I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”
James 1:9...Believers in humble circumstances ought to take pride in their high position.
James 4:10...Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.
James 5:6...Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. 7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

In humility we have grace...
James 4:6...But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.”

What God commands in regard to humility?

We are commanded to seek humility...
Zephaniah 2:3...Seek the LORD, all you humble of the land, you who do what he commands.
Seek righteousness, seek humility; perhaps you will be sheltered on the day of the LORD’s anger.
Ephesians 4:2...2 Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.
I Peter 3:8...Finally, all of you, be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble.

What do we gain from Christ's humility?

We gain rest...
Matthew 11:29...Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

We gain salvation...
Philippians 2:8...And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross!

There are times in this life, when every ounce of our being is challenged to something greater.  Everything about us cries out to be human and yet, deep within is a nudging that we are familiar with, a glimmer of something bigger that wants to grow, seeks to become our primary, not our secondary.  In those moments, we get to decide which we will live for, self or God.  This week, I have been battling with this, seeking to live for God, and yet desiring to know the comforts of the flesh.  This week I have found it necessary to crucify the flesh that Christ might live.

Currently, in my study of love, I am working on the word boast...love does not boast....I really like the "definition" empty glory for this word.  When we live for self, it is an empty glory of who we perceive ourselves to be.  The opposite of this empty glory however is humility.  I am beginning to fathom that not only are we called to be humble, but that it is this humility that allows us to even love with the love of Christ. Humility is the beginning of our journey to love with the Love of Christ.   It is humility that glimmers beneath the surface and seeks to grow into a fullness of Christ beyond what the world can understand.

As I studied humility this week, I found some very interesting things about Christ's humility.  A  humility that was so consuming that it changed a world for all of eternity.  A humility that I must strive to allow to rule my life, even when I have done no wrong.
Philippians 2:1-7 ish

In order just to love us unto repentance, Jesus our Christ had to give up, crucify self, empty Himself so that the following things define for us what real humility is...(I'm sure this is only a partial list and I'm still working on it so feel free to add)...

Christ give up: His heavenly glory and in so doing, live among men
Christ gave up: His face to face communication with God the Father
Christ gave up: His Godly authority by being subject to the Father's will
Christ gave up:  His divine attributes by becoming not just a man, but an uncomely man
Christ gave up: His eternal riches
Christ gave up: His relationship with God, when He took upon Himself the sin of the world   and God could not look upon Him in that sin..."my God my God why have you forsaken me"
Christ gave up: His authority of a man by becoming a servant, the lowest of all men
Christ gave up: His very life
Christ gave up: His pride as He endured humiliation even of that of the cross
Christ gave up: His right to defend Himself, when He opened not His mouth.
Christ gave up: His right to self, by obedience

This is the kind of humility we are called to, the kind of humility we should aspire to have.  Oh how miserably I fail in this, as I battle between flesh and Spirit.

May we all begin to grasp the magnitude of our Christ's love...may we fathom the depths of the humility that brought us to the saving Grace of our Lord and King

Wow, what a good study Lori. Real quick, I think I have a good measure of humility and humbleness. I am a "funny" guy a comedian of sorts, you'd have to spend time with me to understand, so I ACT like I'm not humble to be funny sometimes. I make fun of myself frequently and make myself the butt of the joke. At the same time, I have a temper and if I feel attacked or offended I bite back even worse. I'm not proud of that and I'm getting better at restraining my anger yet it does bother me.

I never try to measure my humility because if I say I am humble, I automatically set myself up for a fall....;) that being said, there have been many times in my life that my pride was challenged which is what God says He will do...humble the proud.

And one of those moments you speak of in my opinion is in the "the dangers of women being silent"

Huh?  Being humbled is one of the dangers of a woman being silent?  I'm totally confused...how is being humbled a danger of woman being silent?

This sixth “Lesson that You Should Be Learning at Home” continues our ongoing study of Family and Ministry, and is titled, “Godliness and Humility.” To be godly is to be devoted to God and the things of God. Godliness requires that we think of ourselves less while esteeming and serving God instead, and loving Him above all. Without a life in Christ, godliness is out of our reach (having falling short of the glory of God). Learn how Jesus’ life, mind, and glory make plain the mystery of godliness and how your life in Christ lived at home teaches you the lessons of godliness and humility.
