Faith
« on: September 28, 2020, 08:10:26 am »
I see a lot of people throw around the word faith as if it has some magic to it but they don't show any real understanding of it.  Some seem to treat FAITH as an abstract, some can define it but don't know how to live it out, some live it but can't define it...a few seem to have a full grasp of faith but that seems very few.  So this thread is an attempt to get a discussion going about what faith is and how to live it out on an everyday basis.  The one thing about faith that does NOT seem to be contested is that it is given by God so if you come here wanting only to talk about it being given by God you will be asked to broaden the discussion or leave...the discussion is not about God giving faith but what it is and what we do with it after it is given.

Fatih equals "believe". "Do you Believe with all your heart" Act 8:37.. The correct answer is "And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God."

The walk with and toward GOD comes after one receives the Holy Spirit (sanctification).

Faith=Belief...Yes, I have faith that GOD is the author of the entire Bible. I have faith that Jesus died , was buried and was resurrected according to scriptures of the entire Bible (OT/NT).

I believe I am saved because my faith in an unseen God and His WORD is Solid!

So this thread is an attempt to get a discussion going about what faith is and how to live it out on an everyday basis.
Faith is an unproven hope:
Heb 11:3 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen (ie, unproven). It is the unproven hope that saves us from the consequences of our choice to sin:  Romans 8:24 For in this hope we were saved; but hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what he can already see? To see, to experience the proof of something that leads to the expectation that it will happen again, is called belief. We believe the sun will rise tomorrow and that water will be wet because it has been proven to be true in all our lives. Thus while belief can be the translation of the word πίστις (pistis), in cases where it refers to an unproven hope, the translators did us a great disservice to render it as belief when It should have only and always been rendered as faith. Trying to equalize a sure belief with an unproven hope has tortured the logic of many a reader, forcing them to negate the cognitive dissonance by use of doublethink.

The problem with trying to live a life in unproven hope is that our sinfulness destroys that hope and we revert back to unfaith. Thus it is necessary for GOD to bolster the faith of sinners until they have become trained in righteousness by the vicissitudes of painful discipline, Heb 12:5-11. Thus, while our success in living a life of faith is found in HIM not in our struggle to be faithful, a sincere effort to be committed to holiness in the face of a lack of proof does smooth the way through our need to be harshly disciplined.

I would say that faith is trust...but here is an interesting passage I also enter into the discussion...Mark 9:23-25
King James Version
23 Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.

24 And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.

it's a growing thing which fits with both the scriptures present and this passage to see faith as trust in this case in the Living God...but also consider our use of the word in everyday life...I have faith the chair will hold me, iow's I trust that it will hold me...belief by the way could fit here but it is belief of the heart that saves, not just belief of the mind or intellect.

Since you said this was what Faith is to us individually, as I understand this, I will try.

Faith to me is this esoteric thing that we all have all ned but can never explain.  It is a feeling we have in moments of stress and trail.  It is a need we have in dark moments.   It is something we develop in our life as we mature into being us.

For some it is strictly a religious thing, for others it is a life thing.  I have a friend that it is strictly a intellectual academic thing - ie faith in math, faith in science faith in studying and learning.  But bring up for religion and they appear to question faith.

Now all that said.  Faith for me is the complete trust in God, that his will for me will lead me in a direction that not only glorfies Him, but helps me bring others to understand Him.   I have confidence in life because I have confidence in God to always be there.  Faith is a state of mind and relationship with God.

Thats just how I feel and view it

Faith or me is that complete trust in Good that his will for me will lead me in a direction that not only glrfies Him, but helps me bring others to understand Him.
Yes, faith CREATES our relationship with GOD but those who chose to reject YHWH (and HIS definitions of reality) as an object of faith and who put their faith in the idea that He was lying about being our creator GOD, by this choice became demonic, unable to be forgiven or redeemed, the denizens of the hell to be.

Iow, the faith the non-believer has in the pantheon of gods and beliefs is NOT from GOD at all but self created and chosen.

Then by your standards and understanding Ted T, I will never be forgiven or redeemed.  That is sad for me then.
