For "everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!”  Romans 10: 13-15 (ESV)

How do you square this with Matt 7:21?

Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.

Mr E I honestly do not try to square them to each other.   Different authors of different books hearing things differently would be my starting point.

We could spend an entire lifetime trying to reconcile all the little and big contradictory statements.  That really is not the purpose of the Bible though, is it?

But, for me I have looked at these: one is giving you a general statement to show you the value of believing, the other is a warning that there are some things in life you can do that are unforgivable to the point it will preclude you from heaven even if you call the Lord's name.   That's the short version.

There is a difference between calling out to God in brokenness and repentance, and claiming He is Lord without any meaning behind the words other than to pretend to have our fire insurance paid up.

Yes, there is Lori.
Interesting phrase:  pretend to have our fire insurance paid up.   At the start of the riding season, there were a few bike blessings I was asked to help with.  I made it to a couple.  At one this big ole burly guy, dressed to look like he was out of a biker movie or TV show.  He ambles by me towards his bike and says, well padre (I am not a father) I guess I better go pay up my life insurance with a little ole blessing from you all.  Better safe than sorry, ya know.

I just did my best chappy smile and nodded my head and went ahead with it all.  Inside I was going "Really that's what you consider this, nothing more than an insurance policy  encase you do something stupid."

Heres the thing with bikers, so many are wrapped up in their macho image, it is hard to know the depths of their faith and belief, but boy sometimes the outward appearance makes you wonder.

Actually, there is/was (haven't kept track but have a friend who was part of it so I guess this is my call to reconnect with him) Biker church in our area.  I never went but not only have a friend who helped start it but have another friend who went.  As I hear, it was on fire for God, but you are right, just thought it might interest you.  One of the
"Biker Gangs" affiliated with it called themselves the SONS of GOD...they were well known in the area but we have moved to a nearby town so like I said, haven't kept up.

How can a young man keep his way pure?

By guarding it according to your word.

10  With my whole heart I seek you;

let me not wander from your commandments!

11  I have stored up your word in my heart,

that I might not sin against you.

12  Blessed are you, O LORD;

teach me your statutes!

13  With my lips I declare

all the rules3 of your mouth.

14  In the way of your testimonies I delight

as much as in all riches.

15  I will meditate on your precepts

and fix my eyes on your ways.

16  I will delight in your statutes;

I will not forget your word.

Psalms 119: 9-16 (ESV)

For no other reason than I like the overall message.   No deep message on my part. :-)

Bonus scripture for the day.

I like this scripture reading and was reminded again of it when listening to an old Byrds album

3:1   To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
3:2   A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;
3:3   A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;
3:4   A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
3:5   A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
3:6   A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;
3:7   A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
3:8   A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.
Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 (KJV)

But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord;  James 1:6-7 (ESV)

7 So each generation should set its hope anew on God, not forgetting his glorious miracles and obeying his commands. 8 Then they will not be like their ancestors— stubborn, rebellious, and unfaithful, refusing to give their hearts to God.   Psalms 78:7-8 (NLT)

In otherwords, if one forgets the past, they are doomed to repeat it!
