Matthew 17:20 English Standard Version (ESV)
20 He said to them, “Because of your little faith. For truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.”

A little back story about the start of my Journey to Faith.   I was not at all interested in religion or faith.  Do not get me wrong being born in 1954 and raised in the Midwest during that time, religion was a huge part of your life growing up.  I just was resistant to anything that felt forced on me.   That is until a small group of us that hung out together started doing our church classes for baptism.   This was in 1966.
At first, I said not interested.  Two things happen, a mom being embarrassed and a girl.  The mom being embarrassed got me to the classes but the girl in the class I had a crush on kept me there and got me involved in the discussions.  I really did not learn that much other than I had no chance with the girl and let’s face it I was 12 years old.
This became important later as, after the baptism, we were each handed out the embossed bible the church had bought us.  On it was a little glass globe with a mustard seed in it.   We all were seated on the front row of pews.  As the minister called out our names, we came up to the altar.  He welcomed us as full members of God’s family and gave us this bible. After all of us had gone through this and the minister allowed some applause, he gave a sermon on the mustard seed and faith.
I still have the bible pictured below and the girl, well we are still friends.

Great story Mark, very touching. I started Kindergarten in Catholic school at St. John The Baptist in St. Louis. In 2nd grade we moved and I went to St. George. As far back as I can remember I believed in God and that He is real. Perhaps that came from my parents and grandparents telling me about God which is most likely how I heard of God. In 2nd grade I was playing on the sidewalk and watching tiny ants. I was tiny but I felt like God watching them. I wondered and marveled at the little things and I knew right then, that God created them and me. To this day I will go out of my way to not step on bugs or ants etc. and I save turtles and birds and injured animals from the road etc. When I think and see creatures of all kinds, I think of our powerful and awesome Lord and Creator. It strengthens my faith and as we know, our faith is weak in relation to the faith that Jesus Christ has.

13 Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 14 As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, 15 but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”   1Peter 1:13-16 ESV

Not a scripture, but about scriptures, borrowed in part from a Father friend.

Today’s message can be found in the first reading in Acts. When Jesus was alive, it seemed that the Apostles never understood his true mission. They came to believe he was the Messiah but were blinded by their assumptions about what the Messiah was to be about. They were thinking about an earthly kingdom and worldly power. They were looking for a deliverance from their earthly plight.
They managed to cling to their expectations right up to the arrest and death of Jesus. However, that experience dashed all their hopes and killed their tightly held expectations! They ended up locked up in an Upper Room filled with fear and darkness. The resurrection of Jesus caught them totally unawares and changed everything. After a little confusion at the beginning few days, they quickly took up the new life and vision Jesus offered them. They had been shocked into action and out of their darkness.
In our first reading we see Peter and John carrying on the mission Jesus had given them, with commitment and confidence. The chief priests and elders confined both Peter and John because they kept proclaiming that Jesus was alive. But the Chief Priest could not intimidate them. They returned to their own people and affirmed that they themselves would continue “to speak the word of God with boldness.” The Word of God is a Word that brings life to those who hear it and take it to heart. There is no place in the hearts of the early Apostles for revenge or recriminations.
As disciples of Jesus, we, too, are called to speak the Word of God to our generation. The problem is, many of us are afraid to tell others about Jesus. We are afraid to share our faith because we think people will reject us or we think we will be embarrassed. Actually, telling others about Jesus, gently and kindly sharing the glorious gospel and your faith in Christ, is one of the most exciting things you can do
To do so faithfully our hearts must also be filled with the same love and compassion that is so clear in the life of Jesus and the lives of Peter, John and the other Apostles. May God continue to open our hearts to his Word of love so that we speak that Word clearly and boldly as did Peter and John.

Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.   Deuteronomy 31:6
