I Explain What It Means To Be Saved
« on: October 13, 2018, 07:40:58 pm »

A common New Testament Greek word for save is sozo (sode'-zo); which means: to rescue and/or protect.

Rescuing is what the Coast Guard does when boats capsize. Rescuing is what Firemen do when people are trapped inside burning buildings. Rescuing is what mountaineer teams do when climbers are in trouble. Rescuing is what EMT paramedics do when someone needs to get to a hospital in a hurry; and kept alive till they arrive. Rescuing is what surgeons do when someone needs an organ transplant. And rescuers are very active getting people to safety in areas ravaged by storms, flooding, and wildfires.

I could go on and on giving examples of rescue after rescue; but I think you get the idea. Christ is like that: he rescues and protects people from the wrath of God-- people who fully deserve it; i.e. people on track for the wrath of God and have no means of their own to escape it. For them; the wrath of God is nigh unto inevitable; unstoppable and coming their way like a tsunami and a 9.0 earthquake.

Luke 2:8-11 . . And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them: Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a rescuer, which is Christ the Lord.

1John 1:9 . . If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

On the surface, that passage says nothing new. Jews are, and were, forgiven and cleansed by means of confession just the same as Christians.

However, the Jews' sins stay on the books. (Ex 34:6-7, Nah 1:3)

Christian sins don't even get in the books to begin with. (2Cor 5:18-19)

Seeing as how the Jews' sins stay on the books, then forgiveness for them amounts to little more than a reprieve; which can be defined as: to delay punishment.

But the reason that Christian sins never even make it to the books is because their punishment was fully accomplished on the cross as joint principals in Christ's crucifixion.

Rom 6:3 . . Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death?

Rom 6:6 . . Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him

Gal 2:20 . . I am crucified with Christ

Col 3:3 . . For you died when Christ died

Numbers of people out there in the world are pretty sure they're going to hell. They can feel it in their bones like instinct and intuition; and many no doubt have come to terms with the prospect.

There isn't a day goes by but that they add yet more and more sins to the indictment that God is building against them. They literally don't have a snowball's chance in hell of ever escaping the wrath of God. Only a miracle can save them now and they know it only too well.

The gospel is often called good news; but in my judicious estimation, it should be called news too good to be true because in it is explained how God has invented a perfectly legal way to get those indictments thrown out, and to acquit those people so completely that on the books it looks as though they have never been anything but 100% innocent.

The last paragraph is excellent.  You have captured what Paul meant exactly.  Cp Rom 4 about the man who does not work.

Matt 14:22-31 . . Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, but the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.

. . During the fourth watch of the night Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. It's a ghost! they said, and cried out in fear. But Jesus immediately said to them: Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid.

. . Lord, if it's you, Peter replied, tell me to come to you on the water. Come, he said.

. .Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out: Lord, save me! Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him.

That incident is often referred to as the shortest prayer on record. My very first sincere prayer was short too. Though not quite as brief as Peter's; my prayer's motive was the same as his: I was in grave peril and needed to be rescued. Here's the text; as near as I can remember.

"God; I know I'm a sinner. I would like to take advantage of your son's death."

I didn't know it at the time, but to-the-point prayers are right up God's alley.

Heb 4:15-16 . . For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and may find grace to help in time of need.

The koiné Greek word for "confidence" in Heb 4:16 is parrhesia (par-rhay-see'-ah) which means: all out-spokenness; viz: frankness, bluntness. In other words: it's okay to speak one's mind, to be candid-- just as we might hang out with beer buddies and/or Alcoholics Anonymous. That is a whole lots more in step with God than reciting rote and/or stuffing pieces of paper in the stone chinks of the so-called Wailing Wall.
