We Have Christ’s Atonement Now

By Justin Johnson

“And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.” – Romans 5:11
Romans 5:11 in the King James Bible is under constant attack for using the word atonement instead of reconciliation. An attack was recently republished by the Berean’s email list originally written by the late Pastor Sadler.

The usual attack is to say that the word atonement means something less than the complete satisfaction of sins through a just reparation.

Instead it is taught that atonement means to merely cover or hide from view, while reconciliation means to clean and remove. While it is true that we have the ministry of reconciliation (2 Cor 5:20), this error makes atonement insufficient to deal with sins.

This causes problems with the clear interpretation of other passages of scripture, and, more importantly, means either Christ did not atone for sins or his substitutionary atonement was incomplete.

None of these are acceptable.

Defining Atonement

The common argument presented in our recent example says:

“The Hebrew word kaphar, translated “atonement” in the Old Testament meant ‘to cover.’ Hence, the blood of bulls and goats merely covered the sins of those in Old Testament times; it didn’t have the efficacy to remove them.”

The failure of animal sacrifices to take away sins is recognized from the teaching in Hebrews 10:4 and Heb 10:11.

“For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.” – Heb 10:4.

But why was it not possible?

If it were true that God-ordained sacrifices never satisfactorily dealt with sins then why is sacrificial blood described as cleansing, reconciling, purging, sanctifying, and forgiving people of sins? (Lev 14:19; Lev 16:30; Eze 43:20; Num 35:33; 1 Sam 3:14; Heb 9:22-23)

Under the law of Moses, God ordained animal sacrifices as a means through which sinful Israel could receive forgiveness, cleansing, reconciliation, and satisfaction before God. It was part of their covenant.

This is contrary to the false idea that atonement does not cleanse, but reconciliation does. This kind of error leads to saying wrong and dangerous things such as:

“In other words, the blood of Christ doesn’t atone for our sins, it actually cleanses them forevermore.” – Sadler, In What Sense Did Christ Atone?.

The truth is that the blood of Christ does atone. it is the final atonement for a nation who needed atoned continually every year, the only propitiation for my sins (Rom 3:25), and is how I receive now the atonement (Rom 5:11).

The Yearly Day of Atonement for Israel

Each year Israel was commanded to have a day of atonement complete with animal sacrifices that would cleanse them from all their sins.

“For on that day shall the priest make an atonement for you, to cleanse you, that ye may be clean from all your sins before the LORD.” – Lev 16:30
According to Hebrews 10 the problem with animal sacrifices was that they were offered continually, repeatedly, over and over, each year. This problem of time and frequency is what Hebrews 10 and Romans 5 addresses, as we shall see.

Why was it not possible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins? (Heb 10:4)

“But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year.” – Hebrews 10:3
Despite the thousands of sacrifices they offered throughout the year, the final day of atonement would bring to remembrance all of those sins and send them out of the nation. Rinse and repeat (Lev 16:34).

When would their sins be taken away once and for all?

Waiting for Atonement

Prophetically, these holy days for Israel spoke to the future time of their promised salvation. Passover was a shadow of Christ’s death. The feast of unleavened bread his burial. The feast of firstfruits his resurrection. The day of atonement was a shadow for the day in Israel’s future when their sins would be atoned once and for all.

Daniel’s seventy weeks prophesied of the final reconciliation for iniquity that would occur at the end of those weeks (Dan 9:24).

Peter preached that since Jesus was Israel’s final sacrifice they had the opportunity for their sins to be blotted out in the future when he returned with the times of refreshing.

“Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord…” – Acts 3:19
Even Paul mentions the future time of fulfillment of their final day of atonement when “all Israel shall be saved” (Romans 11:26).

“For this is my covenant unto them, when I shall take away their sins.” – Romans 11:27

By using the word “atonement” in Romans 5:11 the KJB draws our attention to the subject of Israel’s promises, but by using the word “now” it stands in contrast to their future day of atonement, providing the benefits of atonement to us now in the present dispensation of grace.

The Mystery of Atonement

Israel waits for the fulfillment of their prophesied day of atonement when Jesus will be recognized as their final and better sacrificial Lamb, but Paul describes a mystery in Romans 5 about salvation offered freely to all men now.

By the riches of God’s grace we have many things now as a present possession that Israel has only in a future promise or covenant.

According to the revelation of the mystery, the dispensation of the grace of God, we have peace now with God by faith (Rom 5:1).

We are “now justified by his blood” (Rom 5:9).

Reconciliation is a done deal, as the present benefits of his death; salvation from wrath is guaranteed by his resurrection life (Rom 5:10).

Israel is waiting for their future reconciliation and fulfillment of their day of atonement at the times of refreshing, but now we joy in God because we have NOW the atonement.

Romans 5:11 is correct in saying we have “now the atonement”, because it draws attention to this important mystery truth.

Christ is my atonement, providing all its benefits to me now by his grace.

The Judgment Seat of Christ

http://graceambassadors.com/books/romans/the-judgment-seat-of-christ

By Justin Johnson

Every person will eventually stand before the Lord and be judged.

“So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.” – Romans 14:12

Yes, even those that trust the gospel of the grace of God. After all, Christ is our Head, why wouldn’t we as members of his body be accountable to him?

“we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ.” – Romans 14:10

The important question you need to ask is for what are you being judged? It would be good to know before that day.

The Judgment of Sin

All sin must be judged, but if you trust the gospel, then the judgment you face will not be for sin.

When Christ died he took the judgment for sin upon himself. By his resurrection he offers forgiveness of sins through faith in what he accomplished in our place (Rom 3:24-26; 2 Cor 5:21).

When you trust this gospel that saves you are counted as crucified with Christ, and your sin has already been judged by the cross. What remains for you is to live through the power of the resurrection of Christ.

If you are crucified with Christ, then you will not face a judgment again for sin, because by grace you are saved through faith in Christ. You cannot be condemned for sin again. The judgment of sin is over for you.

Judgment of Responsibility

Though the believer’s sin is judged by Christ’s cross, the saved will still stand before the Lord in judgment.

At this point, some cry “double jeopardy” as if we are held in judgment again for our sins, but this is not so.

Remember, salvation is not from judgment, but from the judgment of sin which is death.

Yes, you are still accountable to the Lord Jesus Christ. There is nothing more right than that members of the Body are held accountable to their Head.

You will face judgment for your responsibility in His body. Being made servants of Christ there is work entrusted to us as members of His body according to what Christ has given us by grace.

In fact, only believers can be held accountable for this work as servants of Christ. Unbelievers are neither made servants of Christ nor do they have any responsibility as workmen for the Lord. They will be accountable to the Lord for their sins at a different judgment.

The judgment where members of the body of Christ attend is called the “judgment seat of Christ” in Romans 14:10. This is different than the judgment of nations before Israel’s kingdom (Matt 25) and the great white throne judgment of the wicked in Rev 20:12 and Rev 21:8.

Our Work Judged

For what are we being judged if not for sin or salvation?

This judgment seat will judge the sort of work done by members of His body, whether according to God’s will or not. It is described in 1 Cor 3 and 2 Cor 5:10.

In 1 Cor 3:10 Paul describes himself as the wise masterbuilder laying the foundation of Christ, elsewhere described as Christ according to the revelation of the mystery (1 Cor 4:1; Rom 16:25).

Paul admonishes…

“let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon” – 1 Cor 3:10

The judgment on that day will not be to determine the character of a man’s soul whether his identity is that of a sinner or a saint. At this judgment all are believers and are sanctified in Christ Jesus by grace through faith (1 Cor 1:30).

Neither is this judgment to weigh the number of good works over against the bad works to see whether on balance a person was good or bad.

Rather, the fire at this judgment will “try every man’s work of what sort it is” (1 Cor 3:13). The sort of work that endures is that which builds and edifies the body of Christ according to the Pauline pattern.

The sort of work that is lost to the fire is that which is not edifying to the body of Christ.

Good work is worthy of a reward. Bad work will not remain.

Conclusion

Do you see how important it is to know the will of God, the mystery of Christ, and how to rightly divide the word of truth?

Without understanding God’s will, we do not know how to build according to plan. Our effort in service will be in vain.

All of our study is for the purpose of pleasing God by the sort of work that will survive the judgment seat of Christ (1 Thess 4:1; Eph 1:5; Eph 2:10). Any lower standard for ministry is vanity.

“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” – 2 Timothy 2:15

The reason we study is not to be right, but to build right. Not building at all is the same as building wrong. It will not last.

“Every man’s work shall be made manifest …” – 1 Corinthians 3:13

Is Right Division Really That Important?

http://graceambassadors.com/midacts/is-right-division-really-that-important

By Justin Johnson

We all know when we have reached a controversial topic, because no one wants to talk about it. For the sake of ‘keeping the church together’ and ‘eliminating unneeded division’ self proclaimed Christians will try to squelch the teaching of dispensational right division by making it seem unimportant.

Have you ever heard it said, ‘your majoring in the minors’. Or perhaps, ‘your straining at a gnat’, is more familiar. A contemporary response goes like this: ‘In essentials unity; in non-essentials liberty; in all things love.’ What does that mean, anyway? Where in the Bible does God list the essentials? Why is it loving to gloss over doctrinal division and steer away from serious discussion?

Doesn’t Paul say that we receive liberty through the gospel of Christ (Gal 2:4-5)? Is the gospel a non-essential? Where it is commonplace to be doctrinally apathetic and biblically ignorant, we are bombarded with the influence of disregarding the revelation of the mystery as trivial. Is it true? Not in the least!

More Important than Salvation
There is no more important thing a soul can do than come to a knowledge of the saving grace of God demonstrated on the cross through Christ. In this aspect, the understanding of the revelation of the mystery is the message through which souls are saved. Ignorance of dispensational right division comes at the risk of eternal damnation.

No where else in scripture do we find the gospel for today, the gospel of the grace of God, other than in the revelation of God to our dispensational pattern. Through Paul, Jesus first revealed the meaning and the purpose of his shed blood for all men. Not of our works, but by faith we are justified by the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

The glory of this truth ‘kept secret since the world began’ is muddled by erroneously combining it with what God has purposely divided. When teachers of scripture do not rightly divide between what is prophetic and what is the revelation of the mystery they are at risk of blurring or losing the efficacy of the power of God unto salvation.

Though many people have been saved by well meaning people who are ignorant of Paul’s apostleship, it is not because they trusted in another gospel. They are saved despite their exposure to improper biblical workmanship.

Unfortunately many others are deluded by ministers who are also blind to the truth, preaching Jesus, but not according to the revelation of the mystery (Rom 16:25). They instead preach another Jesus according to the flesh (2 Cor 5:16). As a result they are trusting in their water baptism, or their good works, or their obedience to the words of Jesus during his earthly ministry when he was a minister of the circumcision:

“Now I say that Jesus Christ was a minister of the circumcision for the truth of God, to confirm the promises made unto the fathers:” – Romans 15:8

Stunted Spiritual Growth
Despite the unclear gospel presentations, there are those who hear the gospel, and by faith believe it and are saved. However, continued subjection to teaching disparate of dispensational right division will stunt spiritual growth.

It is no wonder that we experience a drought of true spirituality if at the source we are not established according to the teaching of Jesus Christ according to the revelation of the mystery.

“Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began, …” – Rom 16:25

Instead, members of the body of Christ are weak, frail, and useless against the ‘body of this death’ and ‘this present evil world’ (Rom 7:24, Gal 1:4). As a result, we have turned to pop psychology and motivational speakers as substitutes for the indwelling of the Holy Spirit who is able to teach us from the word of God rightly divided (1 Cor 2:10-13).

By relinquishing the teaching of dispensational right division to the scrap heap of ‘petty doctrines’, we are spoiling those who would thrive in the protected soil of sound doctrine.

Essentials unity; non-essentials liberty; in all things love
Silencing the teaching of dispensational right division is the cause of unclear gospel presentations and stunted spiritual growth as well as being the single most harmful attack against those who desperately need salvation.

While it is far easier to assume that standing for dispensational right division is non-essential, the truth of God says that without this message the cross of Christ would’ve been a shameful defeat (1 Cor 2:7-8). The dispensation committed unto Paul is the manifold wisdom of God and can not be more essential to our salvation!

Paul speaks of unifying the body of Christ in Ephesians 4:3 after he explains the dispensation of God committed to him in chapter 3. He defends unity when it is not ‘contrary to that which ye have learned’ (Rom 16:17).

Christ gave us liberty through the gospel for our salvation, not as an excuse to ignore ‘non-essential’ Biblical discussion. Instead of using our liberty to be complacent towards doctrinal discussion, we are charged to ‘stand fast’ in it, and not to ‘give place by subjection, not for an hour’.

We are subject to the word of truth rightly divided, and there we stand in Christ.

“Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ; And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ:” – Ephesians 3:8-9

Sin and Your Identity in Christ

http://graceambassadors.com/life/sin-and-your-identity-in-christ

By Justin Johnson

There are tremendous doctrines about who I am in Christ found in Romans chapter six. These identity doctrines deliver you from the power of sin and death.

Missing these important identification truths produces a variety of doctrinal mistakes.

My New Life in Christ

Romans 6:3-4 describes that now we, that are saved, are identified with Christ.

The old man, though present every morning in my flesh, is to be reckoned dead (Rom 6:6, 11).

This teaches that the judgment and sentence of my old man is already complete.

No longer am I trying to make it look better than what it was, nor am I letting it walk around with impunity. It is nailed to Calvary’s cross.

There is now no eternal connection between me and my old man in Adam (Col 2:11).

I am not merely destined to die then face a judgment unto condemnation and death. I am now destined to live in the resurrection of Christ (Rom 6:8).

Freedom from Sin and Death

As a result, sin and death have no more rightful dominion over me (Rom 6:9, 14). The life I live now is the resurrected life of Christ in me, the hope of glory!

Without power of dominion, sin cannot accuse me, condemn me, kill me, or make me subject to it any longer.

It can taunt me like the unrepentant thief crucified next to Jesus, but it is already dead. The thief was nailed to a cross!

When it tries to raise objections to the court, it cannot because the court is already dismissed and the bailiff has him on the electric chair. Anything he might say are seen as last words, and irrelevant to his sentence of death.

Death cannot threaten me with its fear of judgment, for my old man has been judged and is dead. I am now alive in Christ.

Silencing Sin and Death

When these identity doctrines are neglected, then all of the gracious benefits we have in Christ are called into question.

Sin will try to adjudicate over your eternal life by asking, “Can we lose our salvation when we sin?”

Grace responds with, “Your testimony and authority is not valid in this court. The case has been closed. The old man is already dead. This new man is free from your accusations.”

Death will try to object, “But sin must be judged and suffering must match the crime. He did not suffer!”

Grace responds with, “This man is in Christ. Christ died unto sin once, and does not die anymore. You have no right to speak in this court seeing as this man is already dead and resurrected in Christ.”

Neither sin nor death can do anything to change who you are in Christ, free from both.

Identification Mistakes

Those who think that the sin of their old man determines their destiny, direction, or duty have missed the doctrine of their identity with Christ, dead to sin.

Those who think they must suffer even unto death for their sin do not understand who they are in Christ, where death has no dominion.

In Christ, you can forget the daily re-crucifixion of Jesus in the Mass, flagellation, the works of penance, fasting, stair walking, stigmata, prayers of confession, and whatever other forms of suffering the old man tries to perform on itself to make a fair shew in the flesh.

Pleas are no good to save the man that is already dead. These are all useless to rid you of your sins or your sin.

Christ’s Work Against Sin

Christ dealt with all your sin problems by the cross. This is what we mean when we say, “Christ did it all”.

He did more than die a death in your place; he died so that in your place he could conquer death in resurrection.

Do not forget what the Lord Jesus Christ did for you, he not only died for your sins, but he died unto sin for you.

Thank God we are now no longer identified by our weak and useless, corrupt and sinful, old man, but are now identified with the Lord Jesus Christ and the reign of grace.

Christ in You vs. You in Christ

http://graceambassadors.com/mystery/christ-in-you-vs-you-in-christ

By Justin Johnson

About those who are saved Paul says these two things: you are in Christ, and Christ is in you.

“To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory: Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus:” – Colossians 1:27-28

The phrase “Christ in you” is found in Col 1:27, and in the next verse every man is presented perfect “in Christ Jesus” (Col 1:28).

What do these seemingly opposite but similar sounding statements mean?

What’s the difference between ‘you in Christ’ and ‘Christ in you’? The difference is important to see as it concerns the very mystery of Christ.

You in Christ

You in Christ is where you are placed according to God’s purpose. Your position is in Christ.

“And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus” – Ephesians 2:6

When you dwell in a house, you call it your house. Since you are placed into Christ, then Christ is yours, with the high calling, spiritual blessings, inheritance, and power that Christ possesses (Eph 1:18-21).

The imputation of righteousness by faith is due to you being in Christ (2 Cor 5:21). It is his righteousness imputed to you.

‘You in Christ’ concerns you being in his body, the body of Christ.

We are all put into one body by the Spirit (1 Cor 12:13), in a fellowship with Christ (Eph 3:9), when we trust the gospel of Christ. Christ has many members and we all are in him according to the mystery.

“For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.” – Ephesians 5:30

It is the mystery of God’s will that eventually all things will be in Christ so that his power, blessings, and grace can be given to all things in him (Eph 1:10).

Christ in You

If you in Christ is where you are placed according to God’s purpose, then Christ in you is where he is placed according to God’s purpose.

If all that is Christ’s belongs to you when you are in him, then all that is yours belongs to him when he is in you.

You received Christ in you when you heard and trusted the gospel of Jesus Christ (Eph 1:13; Col 2:6).

Paul prays that Christ may dwell in our hearts by faith (Eph 3:17), and that we walk in him having received Christ in us (Col 2:6).

“But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. “ – Romans 8:9

If ‘you in Christ’ is about His body, then ‘Christ in you’ is about your body. Your members are now his (Rom 6:13; 1 Cor 6:19-20).

What drives a man is what is inside him. Faith resides in the inner man. The Spirit of Christ dwells in you (Rom 8:9). When your flesh fails, it is the power of Christ that rests upon you (2 Cor 12:9).

‘You in Christ’ concerns what Christ does toward you, ‘Christ in you’ is what Christ performs in you and through you.

A Great Mystery

Upon salvation we are not only moved to a new place in Christ as a new creature, but we are changed from the inside out with Christ in us.

We are not placed into Israel, covenant, nor into a religion, but into Christ! ,,, and there by grace.

What is put in us is not the law in our heart, the power of positive thinking, nor the hope of feelings and healing, but Christ! …and Him by faith.

This is the great mystery of Christ and the church. It is our job to come to a knowledge of it, and to make all men see it.

“This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.” – Ephesians 5:32

It’s Raining Holy Spirit

http://graceambassadors.com/spirit/its-raining-holy-spirit

By Justin Johnson

“Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?” – 1 Corinthians 3:16

Charismatic Lanny Wolfe wrote in a popular hymn that “surely the presence of the Lord is in this place”, because “I can feel the brush of angels wings”, and “I feel that same sweet Spirit.”

Sometimes people describe the Spirit dwelling in them like a pregnant woman does her baby: “he moved inside me”; but God never says we would feel the Holy Spirit in us.

Even so, it is the lack of a feeling that often prompts prayers for him to rain on us and to come into our presence, our house, and flood us with emotion.

Perhaps the fear is that the Holy Ghost in us gets stale like an old bottle of root beer. There just isn’t any fizz after a while and it needs a good shake.

Of course this is nonsense, but it does not prevent prayers to call the Spirit down upon us like rain when people want to “feel his mighty power”.

A popular Roman Catholic prayer, Come, Holy Spirit, asks the Holy Spirit to come and “kindle a fire” in the faithful. Pentecostals are inclined to pray on any given Sunday for the Holy Spirit to “come on down” like a religious Price is Right.

“Calling down”, “welcoming”, “tarrying”, and “praying to send the Spirit” are all appeals that have been made in church buildings in anticipation that the Spirit would “fill this place”.

To all these prayers perhaps the apostle Paul would respond with:

“What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you…?” – 1 Corinthians 6:19

The Spirit In You

There is no reason why anyone who knows 1 Cor 3:16 and 1 Cor 6:19 should ask for the Holy Spirit to come on them when Paul plainly says the Spirit is already present in everyone that believes the gospel of salvation.

While most of Christianity pleads “Come, Holy Spirit”, perhaps we should be thankful that he stays where he’s at by God’s grace. As our ever present seal of salvation he doesn’t need to move anywhere.

“… in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,” – Eph 1:13

If the Spirit dwells in us then he does not need to come down like he did at Pentecost on covenant Israel. Neither does he need to find his place in us repeatedly every new Sunday as if the the first time was ineffectual.

The Holy Spirit must slide off like water off a duck’s back if continual prayers are needed for him to be “poured out like rain”.

Instead, we need to recognize that he is present every waking (and sleeping) moment of our lives in Christ (Rom 8:9). Paul presents this truth as one very good reason why the Corinthians should shape up their behavior.

Could it be that the wrong doctrine of a distant Spirit that needs to be invited into church meetings is what produces poor manners in many charismatic meetings?

“Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.” – 1 Cor 15:33

If you are in the body of Christ, the Spirit dwells in you. What a grievance it must be for the Spirit among so many ignorant Christians who pray for him to “Come” when he dwells in every member of the body of Christ, that is, if they have indeed heard and believed the word of truth.

The Formula for Experiencing God

http://graceambassadors.com/life/formula-for-experiencing-god

By Justin Johnson

Everyone has emotions. Even people who appear emotionless have emotions. Emotions are what we feel. They are generated by our bodily senses interacting with everyday circumstances.

It is easy to manipulate our emotions based on our circumstances. Entertainers know how to do this with lighting, music, and smells. This is why our feelings cannot be trusted. They are circumstantial.

Unfortunately, it is easy to confuse our emotions with spirituality. The outcome is a pseudo-experience that is generated through soft music, dim lighting, and sweet words.

This is not experiencing God. This is emotional manipulation of the same sort that the world experiences in music concerts or in the movies.

This has become so common in churches that the goal of gathering together is to “feel the Spirit move” and “feel the power of God”.

The counterpart to emotion is doctrine: what we know. We may feel a certain way, but if we know something else then our experience can change.

This is how truth works. We feel one way; truth tells us something else. If we believe the truth, our life experience is changed.

Paul describes this in Romans 5:2-4. Naturally tribulation is a bad thing that produces bad experiences.

But when the doctrine of Romans 5:1 and 2 are applied to the bad circumstance then we gain a beneficial experience that we can glory in.

“And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; And patience, experience; and experience, hope:” – Romans 5:3-4
Our emotion changes from distress to hope!

Sound doctrine from the Bible rightly divided is vitally important for you to experience the life-changing work of God in your life. Without it, we are simply following our circumstances, slaves to our emotions and our flesh.

Churches are filled with people with little to no doctrinal understanding. It is even worse when they have a wrong doctrinal understanding. As a result, the only way to generate the joy, hope, and love that the Bible talks about is with better musicians, more intimate lyrics, and more visual effects.

There is a better way.

The formula for experiencing God is as simple as applying sound doctrine to the circumstances of our lives. When this happens we will experience God and generate emotions that are subject to our mind in Christ.

For you mathematical wizards here is a formula:

Doctrine + Circumstance = Experience + Emotion

Do your homework! (2 Tim 2:15)

Rightly Dividing the Holy Spirit

http://graceambassadors.com/spirit/rightly-dividing-the-holy-spirit

By Justin Johnson

It is right to divide Peter and Paul’s ministries. Peter and Paul both preached Jesus, but in different ways.

One preached Christ according to prophecy, the other according to a mystery (Eph 1:9-10). The same Lord Jesus Christ was glorified in two different ministries.

What should not be missed is that Peter and Paul did not invent their different ministries out of thin air. It was the Holy Spirit that spoke through them.

Rightly dividing the Prophecy and Mystery is rightly dividing the ministry of the Holy Spirit.

The Spirit Testifies of Jesus

Jesus said that when the Comforter was sent at Pentecost he would testify of him.

“But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me…” – John 15:26

When we learn to rightly divide we know it is not sufficient just to testify of Jesus, we also ask the question, “how do we testify Jesus?”

The Lord explained that the Spirit would minister in the same fashion as Jesus in his earthly ministry.

“But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.” – John 14:26

Jesus was a minister of the circumcision (Rom 15:8 ). The Spirit through Peter at Pentecost was a minister of the circumcision as well.

A Change in Ministry

When the Lord Jesus returned to his chief persecutor, Saul, he not only dispensed his abundant grace upon him, but also gave to him a new ministry of himself.

He revealed to Paul how to minister according to a mystery (Rom 16:25).

“But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man. For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ.” – Gal 1:11-12

This mystery of Christ made Paul’s ministry different than the ministry of Peter who spoke only of the subjects in prophecy.

“Yea, and all the prophets from Samuel and those that follow after, as many as have spoken, have likewise foretold of these days.” – Acts 3:24

The Spirit’s Change

At Pentecost it was the Holy Ghost that filled Peter to preach what the prophets spoke (Acts 2:4).

After the Lord Jesus Christ gave a different ministry to Paul, the Spirit changed his ministry as well, testifying of Christ according to the mystery. It was the same Spirit that filled Paul to preach the mystery of Christ.

“Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ) Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit;” – Eph 3:4-5

It was the Spirit working in Peter and Paul that orchestrated the transition from a ministry of Israel to a ministry about the church the new creature.

Same Spirit, Different Ministries

In order to properly rightly divide Pentecost from the Church we must rightly divide the ministry of the Spirit.

It is not enough that we see the Spirit’s ministry, we must ask, “how does he minister?” The way we preach Jesus has changed, because the Spirit changed his ministry to the church.

At Pentecost the Spirit ministered according to prophecy. Through Paul the Spirit ministered the mystery of Christ. Same Spirit, different ministries.

Why Do You Call It Mid-Acts Pauline Dispensational Right Division?

http://graceambassadors.com/midacts/why-do-you-call-it-mid-acts-dispensational-right-division

If you are like most people, when you heard “mid-Acts Pauline dispensational right division” for the first time you were overwhelmed. “What does it mean?!”, “That’s got to be a cult”, or “Why is it so long?”

Truthfully, I wish we could drop the whole thing. No where in the Bible are we told to name ourselves apart from the name of Christ.

Yet, when we live in such a present evil world and a diverse marketplace of ideas we must carry some distinction to describe our doctrine as separate from the rest.

If we must identify ourselves the obvious preference would be to identify ourselves with the Lord Jesus, but it seems people can easily confuse us with the Catholics, Jehovah Witnesses, and Universalists who also name the name of Christ.

Though the mid-Acts description is tedious it does have its advantages: it communicates ‘we are different’, it is honest, it gets peoples’ attention, and it makes a nice satirical jab at denominational nomenclature (we are not trying to start a denomination).

This page seeks to explain exactly why we use each word in our verbose name.

For a better summary of the basics of mid-Acts teaching go here.

Mid-Acts

‘Mid-Acts’ refers to when in Scripture the current dispensation of Grace began (Ephesians 3:1-2).

This present age began when the mystery information was revealed to the Apostle Paul in the middle of the book of Acts (1 Corinthians 9:17).

Often referred to as the ‘church age’, many Bible students wrongly believe this present age began at Pentecost, when Christ died, or even Acts 28.

Pauline refers to Paul being the Apostle of the Gentiles, and having the pattern of salvation that we are saved by today (Romans 11:13;1 Timothy 1:16).
Paul was given a revelation from Jesus Christ about information that had been ‘kept secret since the world began’ (Romans 16:25, Ephesians 3:1-5).

The information revealed to Paul contained an unprophesied ‘new creature’ called the Body of Christ that is saved by grace through faith and will reign with Christ in heaven (2 Corinthians 5:17, Eph 2:7).
Paul was NOT one of the twelve apostles of the prophecy program (1 Cor 15:5-8).

Though Paul was an evangelist, he was not ONLY an evangelist. A gospel dispensation was committed to him about about a secret part of God’s plan for salvation by grace through faith alone (1 Cor 9:16-17).

Paul taught a message that was about Jesus but in a different perspective. It was Jesus Christ according to the revelation of the mystery (Romans 16:25).

Dispensational

A dispensation is when further information was given by God about how we are to relate to Him and the world around us.

Though God is the same yesterday, today, and forever, His instructions for mankind’s operation by faith has been revealed progressively at sundry times and in divers manners (Hebrews 1:1).

Dispensational Bible study recognizes the different messages and methods that God uses to deal with mankind throughout history according to His purpose (1 Corinthians 12:5).

Right Division

Right Division is a method of studying the Bible in the light of recognizing God’s distinct dispensations and programs (1 Corinthians 12:5).

Understanding God’s distinct dispensations, we must divide or discern Scripture according to his separate purposes for the heaven and earth (2 Tim 2:15).

All Scripture is profitable for doctrine, and yet we must discern our instructions from the instructions given by God to other groups at other times (2 Timothy 3:16).

Today as members of the Body of Christ we must carefully apply those doctrines that are specifically for us in the dispensation of Grace.

We would much rather simply be called ‘Bible believers’, ‘those people who teach the gospel of Christ’, or ‘those grace ambassadors of the Lord’.

Whatever you want to call us or the doctrine, we know it makes the Bible a whole lot easier to understand when you obey the Lord’s instructions to Paul.

A rose is a rose, and by any other name would still fade away, but the word of the Lord stands forever (Psalm 119:89).

How to Preach the Love of God in Christ

http://graceambassadors.com/life/how-to-preach-the-love-of-god-in-christ

By Justin Johnson

Jesus described the greatest love a man could have.

“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” – John 15:13

A life is the last thing a man can give. If he gives his life, there is nothing more he can give.

This kind of love is scarce (Rom 5:7), but when it happens it is recognized by all as the greatest love man can give.

Jesus was no ordinary man. He was God manifest in the flesh, the Messiah, the Son of God. In his ministry to Israel he taught the love taught under the law.

“ Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.” – John 15:14

Jesus considered the disciples his friends since they believed and obeyed him. Those who did not follow, obey, or do what Jesus said were not his friends (Matt 10:32-33; Matt 19:22-23).

Jesus had spent the past few years of his life doing good, performing miracles, and teaching to love God and neighbor, but his act of greatest love as a man was yet to come.

Jesus would die for his friends. His body would be broken for those he considered friends. He would deliver them from their enemies (Luke 1:71).

There is nothing greater he could give as a man living perfectly under the law.

God’s Greater Love

While greater love hath no man than to die for his friends, God’s love is greater.

Christ died and rose from the dead. He had displayed the greatest love man could give to his friends, but he had not yet revealed the greatest love of God.

It was not until Christ revealed the mystery of his death and resurrection to Paul that God’s love would be so greatly commended to all (Titus 3:4-6).

Christ’s death was not only the greatest love that a man could have, but now is preached as commending the love of God.

“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” – Romans 5:8

Man’s greatest love is to die for his friends. God’s love is commended by dying for his enemies. This is called grace.

Friends merit love, and dying for them is seen as the greatest display of that love between men.

Enemies do not merit love, and dying for them is seen as not only love but grace. The only one who could give this sort of love and grace and maintain his righteousness is God through Christ.

The Love of God

Preaching the death of Christ for those that love him is preaching the greatest love man could have, but it is not preaching the greater love of God today.

Man’s love is commended by dying for family, friends, and country.

The love of God in Christ’s death surpasses human capability.
The love of God in Christ’s death surpasses human relationship.
The love of God in Christ’s death surpasses human merit.
The love of God in Christ’s death surpasses human sin.
The love of God in Christ’s death surpasses his wrath.

It is not said that the love of God is commended in the birth of Jesus, or the life of Jesus, or even the death of Jesus as a man for his friends, which all happened under the law to his family, friends, and country.

The love of God is commended in the death of Christ for us who are not.

The love of God is commended in the death of Christ for sinners and enemies.

Preaching the love of God in Christ requires preaching the death of Christ according to the dispensation of the grace of God.
