We Have Christ’s Atonement Now

By Justin Johnson

“And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.” – Romans 5:11
Romans 5:11 in the King James Bible is under constant attack for using the word atonement instead of reconciliation. An attack was recently republished by the Berean’s email list originally written by the late Pastor Sadler.

The usual attack is to say that the word atonement means something less than the complete satisfaction of sins through a just reparation.

Instead it is taught that atonement means to merely cover or hide from view, while reconciliation means to clean and remove. While it is true that we have the ministry of reconciliation (2 Cor 5:20), this error makes atonement insufficient to deal with sins.

This causes problems with the clear interpretation of other passages of scripture, and, more importantly, means either Christ did not atone for sins or his substitutionary atonement was incomplete.

None of these are acceptable.

Defining Atonement

The common argument presented in our recent example says:

“The Hebrew word kaphar, translated “atonement” in the Old Testament meant ‘to cover.’ Hence, the blood of bulls and goats merely covered the sins of those in Old Testament times; it didn’t have the efficacy to remove them.”

The failure of animal sacrifices to take away sins is recognized from the teaching in Hebrews 10:4 and Heb 10:11.

“For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.” – Heb 10:4.

But why was it not possible?

If it were true that God-ordained sacrifices never satisfactorily dealt with sins then why is sacrificial blood described as cleansing, reconciling, purging, sanctifying, and forgiving people of sins? (Lev 14:19; Lev 16:30; Eze 43:20; Num 35:33; 1 Sam 3:14; Heb 9:22-23)

Under the law of Moses, God ordained animal sacrifices as a means through which sinful Israel could receive forgiveness, cleansing, reconciliation, and satisfaction before God. It was part of their covenant.

This is contrary to the false idea that atonement does not cleanse, but reconciliation does. This kind of error leads to saying wrong and dangerous things such as:

“In other words, the blood of Christ doesn’t atone for our sins, it actually cleanses them forevermore.” – Sadler, In What Sense Did Christ Atone?.

The truth is that the blood of Christ does atone. it is the final atonement for a nation who needed atoned continually every year, the only propitiation for my sins (Rom 3:25), and is how I receive now the atonement (Rom 5:11).

The Yearly Day of Atonement for Israel

Each year Israel was commanded to have a day of atonement complete with animal sacrifices that would cleanse them from all their sins.

“For on that day shall the priest make an atonement for you, to cleanse you, that ye may be clean from all your sins before the LORD.” – Lev 16:30
According to Hebrews 10 the problem with animal sacrifices was that they were offered continually, repeatedly, over and over, each year. This problem of time and frequency is what Hebrews 10 and Romans 5 addresses, as we shall see.

Why was it not possible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins? (Heb 10:4)

“But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year.” – Hebrews 10:3
Despite the thousands of sacrifices they offered throughout the year, the final day of atonement would bring to remembrance all of those sins and send them out of the nation. Rinse and repeat (Lev 16:34).

When would their sins be taken away once and for all?

Waiting for Atonement

Prophetically, these holy days for Israel spoke to the future time of their promised salvation. Passover was a shadow of Christ’s death. The feast of unleavened bread his burial. The feast of firstfruits his resurrection. The day of atonement was a shadow for the day in Israel’s future when their sins would be atoned once and for all.

Daniel’s seventy weeks prophesied of the final reconciliation for iniquity that would occur at the end of those weeks (Dan 9:24).

Peter preached that since Jesus was Israel’s final sacrifice they had the opportunity for their sins to be blotted out in the future when he returned with the times of refreshing.

“Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord…” – Acts 3:19
Even Paul mentions the future time of fulfillment of their final day of atonement when “all Israel shall be saved” (Romans 11:26).

“For this is my covenant unto them, when I shall take away their sins.” – Romans 11:27

By using the word “atonement” in Romans 5:11 the KJB draws our attention to the subject of Israel’s promises, but by using the word “now” it stands in contrast to their future day of atonement, providing the benefits of atonement to us now in the present dispensation of grace.

The Mystery of Atonement

Israel waits for the fulfillment of their prophesied day of atonement when Jesus will be recognized as their final and better sacrificial Lamb, but Paul describes a mystery in Romans 5 about salvation offered freely to all men now.

By the riches of God’s grace we have many things now as a present possession that Israel has only in a future promise or covenant.

According to the revelation of the mystery, the dispensation of the grace of God, we have peace now with God by faith (Rom 5:1).

We are “now justified by his blood” (Rom 5:9).

Reconciliation is a done deal, as the present benefits of his death; salvation from wrath is guaranteed by his resurrection life (Rom 5:10).

Israel is waiting for their future reconciliation and fulfillment of their day of atonement at the times of refreshing, but now we joy in God because we have NOW the atonement.

Romans 5:11 is correct in saying we have “now the atonement”, because it draws attention to this important mystery truth.

Christ is my atonement, providing all its benefits to me now by his grace.

The Judgment Seat of Christ

http://graceambassadors.com/books/romans/the-judgment-seat-of-christ

By Justin Johnson

Every person will eventually stand before the Lord and be judged.

“So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.” – Romans 14:12

Yes, even those that trust the gospel of the grace of God. After all, Christ is our Head, why wouldn’t we as members of his body be accountable to him?

“we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ.” – Romans 14:10

The important question you need to ask is for what are you being judged? It would be good to know before that day.

The Judgment of Sin

All sin must be judged, but if you trust the gospel, then the judgment you face will not be for sin.

When Christ died he took the judgment for sin upon himself. By his resurrection he offers forgiveness of sins through faith in what he accomplished in our place (Rom 3:24-26; 2 Cor 5:21).

When you trust this gospel that saves you are counted as crucified with Christ, and your sin has already been judged by the cross. What remains for you is to live through the power of the resurrection of Christ.

If you are crucified with Christ, then you will not face a judgment again for sin, because by grace you are saved through faith in Christ. You cannot be condemned for sin again. The judgment of sin is over for you.

Judgment of Responsibility

Though the believer’s sin is judged by Christ’s cross, the saved will still stand before the Lord in judgment.

At this point, some cry “double jeopardy” as if we are held in judgment again for our sins, but this is not so.

Remember, salvation is not from judgment, but from the judgment of sin which is death.

Yes, you are still accountable to the Lord Jesus Christ. There is nothing more right than that members of the Body are held accountable to their Head.

You will face judgment for your responsibility in His body. Being made servants of Christ there is work entrusted to us as members of His body according to what Christ has given us by grace.

In fact, only believers can be held accountable for this work as servants of Christ. Unbelievers are neither made servants of Christ nor do they have any responsibility as workmen for the Lord. They will be accountable to the Lord for their sins at a different judgment.

The judgment where members of the body of Christ attend is called the “judgment seat of Christ” in Romans 14:10. This is different than the judgment of nations before Israel’s kingdom (Matt 25) and the great white throne judgment of the wicked in Rev 20:12 and Rev 21:8.

Our Work Judged

For what are we being judged if not for sin or salvation?

This judgment seat will judge the sort of work done by members of His body, whether according to God’s will or not. It is described in 1 Cor 3 and 2 Cor 5:10.

In 1 Cor 3:10 Paul describes himself as the wise masterbuilder laying the foundation of Christ, elsewhere described as Christ according to the revelation of the mystery (1 Cor 4:1; Rom 16:25).

Paul admonishes…

“let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon” – 1 Cor 3:10

The judgment on that day will not be to determine the character of a man’s soul whether his identity is that of a sinner or a saint. At this judgment all are believers and are sanctified in Christ Jesus by grace through faith (1 Cor 1:30).

Neither is this judgment to weigh the number of good works over against the bad works to see whether on balance a person was good or bad.

Rather, the fire at this judgment will “try every man’s work of what sort it is” (1 Cor 3:13). The sort of work that endures is that which builds and edifies the body of Christ according to the Pauline pattern.

The sort of work that is lost to the fire is that which is not edifying to the body of Christ.

Good work is worthy of a reward. Bad work will not remain.

Conclusion

Do you see how important it is to know the will of God, the mystery of Christ, and how to rightly divide the word of truth?

Without understanding God’s will, we do not know how to build according to plan. Our effort in service will be in vain.

All of our study is for the purpose of pleasing God by the sort of work that will survive the judgment seat of Christ (1 Thess 4:1; Eph 1:5; Eph 2:10). Any lower standard for ministry is vanity.

“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” – 2 Timothy 2:15

The reason we study is not to be right, but to build right. Not building at all is the same as building wrong. It will not last.

“Every man’s work shall be made manifest …” – 1 Corinthians 3:13

Is Right Division Really That Important?

http://graceambassadors.com/midacts/is-right-division-really-that-important

By Justin Johnson

We all know when we have reached a controversial topic, because no one wants to talk about it. For the sake of ‘keeping the church together’ and ‘eliminating unneeded division’ self proclaimed Christians will try to squelch the teaching of dispensational right division by making it seem unimportant.

Have you ever heard it said, ‘your majoring in the minors’. Or perhaps, ‘your straining at a gnat’, is more familiar. A contemporary response goes like this: ‘In essentials unity; in non-essentials liberty; in all things love.’ What does that mean, anyway? Where in the Bible does God list the essentials? Why is it loving to gloss over doctrinal division and steer away from serious discussion?

Doesn’t Paul say that we receive liberty through the gospel of Christ (Gal 2:4-5)? Is the gospel a non-essential? Where it is commonplace to be doctrinally apathetic and biblically ignorant, we are bombarded with the influence of disregarding the revelation of the mystery as trivial. Is it true? Not in the least!

More Important than Salvation
There is no more important thing a soul can do than come to a knowledge of the saving grace of God demonstrated on the cross through Christ. In this aspect, the understanding of the revelation of the mystery is the message through which souls are saved. Ignorance of dispensational right division comes at the risk of eternal damnation.

No where else in scripture do we find the gospel for today, the gospel of the grace of God, other than in the revelation of God to our dispensational pattern. Through Paul, Jesus first revealed the meaning and the purpose of his shed blood for all men. Not of our works, but by faith we are justified by the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

The glory of this truth ‘kept secret since the world began’ is muddled by erroneously combining it with what God has purposely divided. When teachers of scripture do not rightly divide between what is prophetic and what is the revelation of the mystery they are at risk of blurring or losing the efficacy of the power of God unto salvation.

Though many people have been saved by well meaning people who are ignorant of Paul’s apostleship, it is not because they trusted in another gospel. They are saved despite their exposure to improper biblical workmanship.

Unfortunately many others are deluded by ministers who are also blind to the truth, preaching Jesus, but not according to the revelation of the mystery (Rom 16:25). They instead preach another Jesus according to the flesh (2 Cor 5:16). As a result they are trusting in their water baptism, or their good works, or their obedience to the words of Jesus during his earthly ministry when he was a minister of the circumcision:

“Now I say that Jesus Christ was a minister of the circumcision for the truth of God, to confirm the promises made unto the fathers:” – Romans 15:8

Stunted Spiritual Growth
Despite the unclear gospel presentations, there are those who hear the gospel, and by faith believe it and are saved. However, continued subjection to teaching disparate of dispensational right division will stunt spiritual growth.

It is no wonder that we experience a drought of true spirituality if at the source we are not established according to the teaching of Jesus Christ according to the revelation of the mystery.

“Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began, …” – Rom 16:25

Instead, members of the body of Christ are weak, frail, and useless against the ‘body of this death’ and ‘this present evil world’ (Rom 7:24, Gal 1:4). As a result, we have turned to pop psychology and motivational speakers as substitutes for the indwelling of the Holy Spirit who is able to teach us from the word of God rightly divided (1 Cor 2:10-13).

By relinquishing the teaching of dispensational right division to the scrap heap of ‘petty doctrines’, we are spoiling those who would thrive in the protected soil of sound doctrine.

Essentials unity; non-essentials liberty; in all things love
Silencing the teaching of dispensational right division is the cause of unclear gospel presentations and stunted spiritual growth as well as being the single most harmful attack against those who desperately need salvation.

While it is far easier to assume that standing for dispensational right division is non-essential, the truth of God says that without this message the cross of Christ would’ve been a shameful defeat (1 Cor 2:7-8). The dispensation committed unto Paul is the manifold wisdom of God and can not be more essential to our salvation!

Paul speaks of unifying the body of Christ in Ephesians 4:3 after he explains the dispensation of God committed to him in chapter 3. He defends unity when it is not ‘contrary to that which ye have learned’ (Rom 16:17).

Christ gave us liberty through the gospel for our salvation, not as an excuse to ignore ‘non-essential’ Biblical discussion. Instead of using our liberty to be complacent towards doctrinal discussion, we are charged to ‘stand fast’ in it, and not to ‘give place by subjection, not for an hour’.

We are subject to the word of truth rightly divided, and there we stand in Christ.

“Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ; And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ:” – Ephesians 3:8-9
