Matthew 17:20 English Standard Version (ESV)
20 He said to them, “Because of your little faith. For truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.”

A little back story about the start of my Journey to Faith.   I was not at all interested in religion or faith.  Do not get me wrong being born in 1954 and raised in the Midwest during that time, religion was a huge part of your life growing up.  I just was resistant to anything that felt forced on me.   That is until a small group of us that hung out together started doing our church classes for baptism.   This was in 1966.
At first, I said not interested.  Two things happen, a mom being embarrassed and a girl.  The mom being embarrassed got me to the classes but the girl in the class I had a crush on kept me there and got me involved in the discussions.  I really did not learn that much other than I had no chance with the girl and let’s face it I was 12 years old.
This became important later as, after the baptism, we were each handed out the embossed bible the church had bought us.  On it was a little glass globe with a mustard seed in it.   We all were seated on the front row of pews.  As the minister called out our names, we came up to the altar.  He welcomed us as full members of God’s family and gave us this bible. After all of us had gone through this and the minister allowed some applause, he gave a sermon on the mustard seed and faith.
I still have the bible pictured below and the girl, well we are still friends.

Great story Mark, very touching. I started Kindergarten in Catholic school at St. John The Baptist in St. Louis. In 2nd grade we moved and I went to St. George. As far back as I can remember I believed in God and that He is real. Perhaps that came from my parents and grandparents telling me about God which is most likely how I heard of God. In 2nd grade I was playing on the sidewalk and watching tiny ants. I was tiny but I felt like God watching them. I wondered and marveled at the little things and I knew right then, that God created them and me. To this day I will go out of my way to not step on bugs or ants etc. and I save turtles and birds and injured animals from the road etc. When I think and see creatures of all kinds, I think of our powerful and awesome Lord and Creator. It strengthens my faith and as we know, our faith is weak in relation to the faith that Jesus Christ has.

13 Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 14 As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, 15 but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”   1Peter 1:13-16 ESV

Not a scripture, but about scriptures, borrowed in part from a Father friend.

Today’s message can be found in the first reading in Acts. When Jesus was alive, it seemed that the Apostles never understood his true mission. They came to believe he was the Messiah but were blinded by their assumptions about what the Messiah was to be about. They were thinking about an earthly kingdom and worldly power. They were looking for a deliverance from their earthly plight.
They managed to cling to their expectations right up to the arrest and death of Jesus. However, that experience dashed all their hopes and killed their tightly held expectations! They ended up locked up in an Upper Room filled with fear and darkness. The resurrection of Jesus caught them totally unawares and changed everything. After a little confusion at the beginning few days, they quickly took up the new life and vision Jesus offered them. They had been shocked into action and out of their darkness.
In our first reading we see Peter and John carrying on the mission Jesus had given them, with commitment and confidence. The chief priests and elders confined both Peter and John because they kept proclaiming that Jesus was alive. But the Chief Priest could not intimidate them. They returned to their own people and affirmed that they themselves would continue “to speak the word of God with boldness.” The Word of God is a Word that brings life to those who hear it and take it to heart. There is no place in the hearts of the early Apostles for revenge or recriminations.
As disciples of Jesus, we, too, are called to speak the Word of God to our generation. The problem is, many of us are afraid to tell others about Jesus. We are afraid to share our faith because we think people will reject us or we think we will be embarrassed. Actually, telling others about Jesus, gently and kindly sharing the glorious gospel and your faith in Christ, is one of the most exciting things you can do
To do so faithfully our hearts must also be filled with the same love and compassion that is so clear in the life of Jesus and the lives of Peter, John and the other Apostles. May God continue to open our hearts to his Word of love so that we speak that Word clearly and boldly as did Peter and John.

For everything there is a season and a time for every matter under heaven:
2  a time to be born, and a time to die;
a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted;

3  a time to kill, and a time to heal;
a time to break down, and a time to build up;

4  a time to weep, and a time to laugh;
a time to mourn, and a time to dance;

5  a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together;
a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;

6  a time to seek, and a time to lose;
a time to keep, and a time to cast away;

7  a time to tear, and a time to sew;
a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;

8  a time to love, and a time to hate;
a time for war, and a time for peace.

Where do you pray?  Where is your comfortable place that you feel your prayers will be heard?   Thomas Merton, a modern theologian, Trappist monk, and writer, even though was already in a monastery, still needed to check out even further to feel his prayers were heard.  He would leave the monastery to contemplate and pray in a gardeners shed outside the walls of the monastery.

Our Lord Jesus prayers by the river.   Think about this next time you pray.

 3 For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating one another. 4 But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, 5 he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, 6 whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.  Titus 3: 3-7  ESV

Most of the times I use the ESV, did I get one wrong.  My typing does suck at times but I try very hard to not make an error on scriptures

I am a firm believer in the KJV but recognize other versions are somewhat accurate.The biggest problem is the Doubt these versions suggest as did the snake in the Garden of Eden: " Yea, hath God said" (Gen 3:1)

The way I look at these Bible including the ESV is: Would someone not knowing anything about the Bible and have not heard about the Bible, come away with the correct information about God and Jesus Christ. The answer I have found, is NO!.........

Example.... 1 TIm 3:15..(KJV)."And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory."

What do you come away with this verse...."That GOD was manifest in the flesh" or Jesus is GOD!

1 Tim 3:15..(ESV)..Great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of godliness:
He[fn] was manifested in the flesh,
vindicated[fn] by the Spirit,[fn]
seen by angels,
proclaimed among the nations,
believed on in the world,
taken up in glory.

What would this person come away with this verse...WHO IS HE??????Jesus was manifest in the flesh......A doubt spread about His deity.   I see this a lot on these forums.

NO--GOD was manifest in the Flesh.....If you did not know Jesus was GOD then this scripture would lead one to believe that Jesus was just a man....Ask *****, as she is the same opinion that Jesus was/is  just a man not GOD.

Have removed the name but she is in the Theology Forums. She and many others are of the same mind mainly because of version teaching such as this.

We will have to agree to disagree on the KJV my friend.  It is by far the most eloquently written but it has never been the most accurate.  Myself, when I am doing research using the bible I prefer the Oxford, when I am quoting I prefer the ESV.  However, for pure accuracy in translation from the original texts of Latin and Greek and Aramaic is the NASB.

If I was just a true believer I would still be a nothing but .... pick you version.  I use several version in all my studies.

Of course, this is just me, and everybody else feelings are just as valid as I feel mine are for me.

I accept and like the ESV and the NASB - I was gifted a NIV Study Bible and it's nice but it did not open up to me like the King James. I trust the KJV over any other Bible period.

Part of being a Chaplain something has nothing to do with faith or scriptures.  In Western culture, especially here in the USA we tend to be more concerned with "witnessing" and with "testimony" of those of faith.   As a Chaplain, it is more important for you to be there, being present than just "doing" what those wanting proof expect.

two scriptures I find are helpful in explaining both aspects of a chaplain

14 What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? 15 pIf a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good2 is that? 17 So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.  James 2:14-17

This is the call that as a Chaplain, you need to provide action, not just stand and quote faith to those needing more than religious platitudes.

36 Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, “Sit here, while I go over there and pray.” 37 And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38 Then he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and qwatch4 with me.” 39 And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.” 40 And he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. And he said to Peter, “So, could you not watch with me one hour? 41 Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” 42 Again, for the second time, he went away and prayed, “My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done.” 43 And again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. 44 So, leaving them again, he went away and prayed for the third time, saying the same words again. 45 Then he came to the disciples and said to them, “Sleep and take your rest later on.5 See, the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46 Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand.”

When I first read this, it occurred to me that this was when Jesus just ask for three of his disciples to just be there, nothing more.   Something to think about in our daily interactions with others,  Sometimes we can do more to help the person and to serve God, by just being there and nothing more.   Think about that.

. 5 For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue,5 and virtue with knowledge, 6 and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, 7 and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. 8 For if these qualities6 are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 For whoever lacks these qualities is so nearsighted that he is blind, having forgotten that he was cleansed from his former sins.  2 Peter 1:5-9  (ESV)

9 For this reason also, since the day we heard of it, we have not ceased to pray for you and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, 10 so that you will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God;   Colossians 1:9-10 (NASB)

slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.

9  He will not always chide,

nor will he keep his anger forever.

10  He does not deal with us according to our sins,

nor repay us according to our iniquities.

11  For as high as the heavens are above the earth,

so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him;

12  as far as the east is from the west,

so far does he remove our transgressions from us.

I know this question will drive many people crazy but the first part of this passage talks about proclaiming the gospel to the "WHOLE CREATION" when was the last time we preached to the cat or dog or birds in our yards?  Or is there something a bit deeper to that proclamation?

I'm thinking about (just my first thoughts, nothing more or less) that we proclaim the gospel through how we live as much as with our words and thus it is important to live every moment in faith/trust of the Living God, not just for the animals in the yard and the people we meet but for the celestrial beings we don't see as well.

Any thoughts?

I agree that it says the whole of God's creation and I think that applies how you interact with all of them.  The birds, dog, cats, and all.  I know when my journey back to faith started it was the subtle things like a bird bath, bird feeder, critter food and the like.  I started talking to my cat about things to include religion and beliefs.

My thoughts is, a short answer, we proclaim the gospel more through our actions than we do our words.  For the first things others see and understand is our actions.

As a human, it is natural to worry. When I find myself worrying about something, I stop, talk to Jesus which relieves that worry. Those instances of worry have been getting fewer and fewer as I lean on Jesus more and more.

9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10 for the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.  2 Corinthians 12:9-10

7:51   Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye.  Acts 7:51 (KJV)

I picked this one due to a recent conversation at a motorcycle club meeting.

But God has so composed the body, giving greater honor to the part that lacked it, 25 that there may be no division in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another. 26 If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, pall rejoice together.
27 Now qyou are the body of Christ and individually rmembers of it.
1 Corinthians 12:25-27 (ESV)

 8 And the angel said to him, “Dress yourself and put on your sandals.” And he did so. And he said to him, “Wrap your cloak around you and follow me.” 9 And he went out and followed him. He did not know that what was being done by the angel was really happening, but thought he was seeing a vision.  Acts12:8-9  (ESV)

Is this  not similar to us when Jesus comes into our lives.  He told us to hold to his teachings and we would know the truth and this truth would set us free.   Why do we rest this?  Because most of us can't believe it is really happening and we are seeing  visions or something similar.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord, and turn away from evil. It will be healing to your flesh and refreshment to your bones. Proverbs 3:5-8 (ESV)

12 Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him. 13 Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. 14 But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. 15 Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.  James 1:12-15 (ESV)
