Matthew 17:20 English Standard Version (ESV)
20 He said to them, “Because of your little faith. For truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.”

A little back story about the start of my Journey to Faith.   I was not at all interested in religion or faith.  Do not get me wrong being born in 1954 and raised in the Midwest during that time, religion was a huge part of your life growing up.  I just was resistant to anything that felt forced on me.   That is until a small group of us that hung out together started doing our church classes for baptism.   This was in 1966.
At first, I said not interested.  Two things happen, a mom being embarrassed and a girl.  The mom being embarrassed got me to the classes but the girl in the class I had a crush on kept me there and got me involved in the discussions.  I really did not learn that much other than I had no chance with the girl and let’s face it I was 12 years old.
This became important later as, after the baptism, we were each handed out the embossed bible the church had bought us.  On it was a little glass globe with a mustard seed in it.   We all were seated on the front row of pews.  As the minister called out our names, we came up to the altar.  He welcomed us as full members of God’s family and gave us this bible. After all of us had gone through this and the minister allowed some applause, he gave a sermon on the mustard seed and faith.
I still have the bible pictured below and the girl, well we are still friends.

Great story Mark, very touching. I started Kindergarten in Catholic school at St. John The Baptist in St. Louis. In 2nd grade we moved and I went to St. George. As far back as I can remember I believed in God and that He is real. Perhaps that came from my parents and grandparents telling me about God which is most likely how I heard of God. In 2nd grade I was playing on the sidewalk and watching tiny ants. I was tiny but I felt like God watching them. I wondered and marveled at the little things and I knew right then, that God created them and me. To this day I will go out of my way to not step on bugs or ants etc. and I save turtles and birds and injured animals from the road etc. When I think and see creatures of all kinds, I think of our powerful and awesome Lord and Creator. It strengthens my faith and as we know, our faith is weak in relation to the faith that Jesus Christ has.

13 Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 14 As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, 15 but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”   1Peter 1:13-16 ESV

Not a scripture, but about scriptures, borrowed in part from a Father friend.

Today’s message can be found in the first reading in Acts. When Jesus was alive, it seemed that the Apostles never understood his true mission. They came to believe he was the Messiah but were blinded by their assumptions about what the Messiah was to be about. They were thinking about an earthly kingdom and worldly power. They were looking for a deliverance from their earthly plight.
They managed to cling to their expectations right up to the arrest and death of Jesus. However, that experience dashed all their hopes and killed their tightly held expectations! They ended up locked up in an Upper Room filled with fear and darkness. The resurrection of Jesus caught them totally unawares and changed everything. After a little confusion at the beginning few days, they quickly took up the new life and vision Jesus offered them. They had been shocked into action and out of their darkness.
In our first reading we see Peter and John carrying on the mission Jesus had given them, with commitment and confidence. The chief priests and elders confined both Peter and John because they kept proclaiming that Jesus was alive. But the Chief Priest could not intimidate them. They returned to their own people and affirmed that they themselves would continue “to speak the word of God with boldness.” The Word of God is a Word that brings life to those who hear it and take it to heart. There is no place in the hearts of the early Apostles for revenge or recriminations.
As disciples of Jesus, we, too, are called to speak the Word of God to our generation. The problem is, many of us are afraid to tell others about Jesus. We are afraid to share our faith because we think people will reject us or we think we will be embarrassed. Actually, telling others about Jesus, gently and kindly sharing the glorious gospel and your faith in Christ, is one of the most exciting things you can do
To do so faithfully our hearts must also be filled with the same love and compassion that is so clear in the life of Jesus and the lives of Peter, John and the other Apostles. May God continue to open our hearts to his Word of love so that we speak that Word clearly and boldly as did Peter and John.

For everything there is a season and a time for every matter under heaven:
2  a time to be born, and a time to die;
a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted;

3  a time to kill, and a time to heal;
a time to break down, and a time to build up;

4  a time to weep, and a time to laugh;
a time to mourn, and a time to dance;

5  a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together;
a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;

6  a time to seek, and a time to lose;
a time to keep, and a time to cast away;

7  a time to tear, and a time to sew;
a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;

8  a time to love, and a time to hate;
a time for war, and a time for peace.

Where do you pray?  Where is your comfortable place that you feel your prayers will be heard?   Thomas Merton, a modern theologian, Trappist monk, and writer, even though was already in a monastery, still needed to check out even further to feel his prayers were heard.  He would leave the monastery to contemplate and pray in a gardeners shed outside the walls of the monastery.

Our Lord Jesus prayers by the river.   Think about this next time you pray.

 3 For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating one another. 4 But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, 5 he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, 6 whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.  Titus 3: 3-7  ESV

Most of the times I use the ESV, did I get one wrong.  My typing does suck at times but I try very hard to not make an error on scriptures

I am a firm believer in the KJV but recognize other versions are somewhat accurate.The biggest problem is the Doubt these versions suggest as did the snake in the Garden of Eden: " Yea, hath God said" (Gen 3:1)

The way I look at these Bible including the ESV is: Would someone not knowing anything about the Bible and have not heard about the Bible, come away with the correct information about God and Jesus Christ. The answer I have found, is NO!.........

Example.... 1 TIm 3:15..(KJV)."And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory."

What do you come away with this verse...."That GOD was manifest in the flesh" or Jesus is GOD!

1 Tim 3:15..(ESV)..Great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of godliness:
He[fn] was manifested in the flesh,
vindicated[fn] by the Spirit,[fn]
seen by angels,
proclaimed among the nations,
believed on in the world,
taken up in glory.

What would this person come away with this verse...WHO IS HE??????Jesus was manifest in the flesh......A doubt spread about His deity.   I see this a lot on these forums.

NO--GOD was manifest in the Flesh.....If you did not know Jesus was GOD then this scripture would lead one to believe that Jesus was just a man....Ask *****, as she is the same opinion that Jesus was/is  just a man not GOD.

Have removed the name but she is in the Theology Forums. She and many others are of the same mind mainly because of version teaching such as this.

We will have to agree to disagree on the KJV my friend.  It is by far the most eloquently written but it has never been the most accurate.  Myself, when I am doing research using the bible I prefer the Oxford, when I am quoting I prefer the ESV.  However, for pure accuracy in translation from the original texts of Latin and Greek and Aramaic is the NASB.

If I was just a true believer I would still be a nothing but .... pick you version.  I use several version in all my studies.

Of course, this is just me, and everybody else feelings are just as valid as I feel mine are for me.

I accept and like the ESV and the NASB - I was gifted a NIV Study Bible and it's nice but it did not open up to me like the King James. I trust the KJV over any other Bible period.

Part of being a Chaplain something has nothing to do with faith or scriptures.  In Western culture, especially here in the USA we tend to be more concerned with "witnessing" and with "testimony" of those of faith.   As a Chaplain, it is more important for you to be there, being present than just "doing" what those wanting proof expect.

two scriptures I find are helpful in explaining both aspects of a chaplain

14 What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? 15 pIf a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good2 is that? 17 So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.  James 2:14-17

This is the call that as a Chaplain, you need to provide action, not just stand and quote faith to those needing more than religious platitudes.

36 Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, “Sit here, while I go over there and pray.” 37 And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38 Then he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and qwatch4 with me.” 39 And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.” 40 And he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. And he said to Peter, “So, could you not watch with me one hour? 41 Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” 42 Again, for the second time, he went away and prayed, “My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done.” 43 And again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. 44 So, leaving them again, he went away and prayed for the third time, saying the same words again. 45 Then he came to the disciples and said to them, “Sleep and take your rest later on.5 See, the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46 Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand.”

When I first read this, it occurred to me that this was when Jesus just ask for three of his disciples to just be there, nothing more.   Something to think about in our daily interactions with others,  Sometimes we can do more to help the person and to serve God, by just being there and nothing more.   Think about that.

. 5 For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue,5 and virtue with knowledge, 6 and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, 7 and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. 8 For if these qualities6 are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 For whoever lacks these qualities is so nearsighted that he is blind, having forgotten that he was cleansed from his former sins.  2 Peter 1:5-9  (ESV)

9 For this reason also, since the day we heard of it, we have not ceased to pray for you and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, 10 so that you will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God;   Colossians 1:9-10 (NASB)

slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.

9  He will not always chide,

nor will he keep his anger forever.

10  He does not deal with us according to our sins,

nor repay us according to our iniquities.

11  For as high as the heavens are above the earth,

so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him;

12  as far as the east is from the west,

so far does he remove our transgressions from us.

I know this question will drive many people crazy but the first part of this passage talks about proclaiming the gospel to the "WHOLE CREATION" when was the last time we preached to the cat or dog or birds in our yards?  Or is there something a bit deeper to that proclamation?

I'm thinking about (just my first thoughts, nothing more or less) that we proclaim the gospel through how we live as much as with our words and thus it is important to live every moment in faith/trust of the Living God, not just for the animals in the yard and the people we meet but for the celestrial beings we don't see as well.

Any thoughts?

I agree that it says the whole of God's creation and I think that applies how you interact with all of them.  The birds, dog, cats, and all.  I know when my journey back to faith started it was the subtle things like a bird bath, bird feeder, critter food and the like.  I started talking to my cat about things to include religion and beliefs.

My thoughts is, a short answer, we proclaim the gospel more through our actions than we do our words.  For the first things others see and understand is our actions.

As a human, it is natural to worry. When I find myself worrying about something, I stop, talk to Jesus which relieves that worry. Those instances of worry have been getting fewer and fewer as I lean on Jesus more and more.

 8 And the angel said to him, “Dress yourself and put on your sandals.” And he did so. And he said to him, “Wrap your cloak around you and follow me.” 9 And he went out and followed him. He did not know that what was being done by the angel was really happening, but thought he was seeing a vision.  Acts12:8-9  (ESV)

Is this  not similar to us when Jesus comes into our lives.  He told us to hold to his teachings and we would know the truth and this truth would set us free.   Why do we rest this?  Because most of us can't believe it is really happening and we are seeing  visions or something similar.

12 Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him. 13 Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. 14 But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. 15 Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.  James 1:12-15 (ESV)

5:19   To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.
5:20   Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God.

Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear— but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious. 1 Peter 3:3-4 (ESV)

3 Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. 4 Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight. 1 Peter 3:3-4 (NIV)

Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers, but his delight is in the law2 of the LORD, and on his law, he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither.  In all that he does, he prospers. The wicked are not so,
but are like chaff that the wind drives away.  Psalms 1:1-4 (ESV)

or a more eloquent version.

1:1   Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.
1:2   But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
1:3   And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.
1:4   The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.

Now Joseph was handsome in form and appearance. 7 And after a time his master’s wife cast her eyes on Joseph and said, “Lie with me.” 8 But he refused and said to his master’s wife, “Behold, because of me my master has no concern about anything in the house, and he has put everything that he has in my charge. 9 He is not greater in this house than I am, nor has he kept back anything from me except you because you are his wife. Jeremiah 17:5-15 KJV -

Thus saith the Lord; Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the Lord.

6 For he shall be like the heath in the desert, and shall not see when good cometh; but shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, in a salt land and not inhabited.

7 Blessed is the man that trusteth in the Lord, and whose hope the Lord is.

8 For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.

9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?

10 I the Lord search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.

11 As the partridge sitteth on eggs, and hatcheth them not; so he that getteth riches, and not by right, shall leave them in the midst of his days, and at his end shall be a fool.

12 A glorious high throne from the beginning is the place of our sanctuary.

13 O Lord, the hope of Israel, all that forsake thee shall be ashamed, and they that depart from me shall be written in the earth, because they have forsaken the Lord, the fountain of living waters.

14 Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved: for thou art my praise.

15 Behold, they say unto me, Where is the word of the Lord? let it come now.

This just felt right tonight

Let me ask you only this: Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law or by hearing with faith? 3 Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh? Did you suffer so many things in vain—if indeed it was in vain? Does he who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you do so by works of the law, or by hearing with faith— just as Abraham “believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”?  Galatians 3:2-6

Seems good for all the emotional pain we are going through and the dark thoughts some are hope happens to our country.   We all need to take a deep breath and trust in the Lord that his plan will be for the benefit of all in due time.  Blessing on us all and all my forum friends.

36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” 37 And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And ha second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 40 On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”
Matthew 22:36-40

This just seems like something we all should remember during these divisive times.  Just my humble opinion.

44 And Jesus cried out and said, “Whoever believes in me, believes not in me but in him who sent me. 45 And whoever sees me sees him who sent me. 46 I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness. 47 If anyone hears my words and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world. 48 The one who rejects me and does not receive my words has a judge; the word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day. 49 For I have not spoken on my own authority, but the Father who sent me has himself given me a commandment—what to say and what to speak. 50 And I know that his commandment is eternal life. What I say, therefore, I say as the Father has told me.”

For the promise to Abraham and his offspring that he would be heir of the world did not come through the law but through the righteousness of faith. For if it is the adherents of the law who are to be the heirs, faith is null and the promise is void.  For the law brings wrath, but where there is no law there is no transgression.
That is why it depends on faith, kin order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his offspring—not only to the adherent of the law but also to the one who shares the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all, 17 as it is written, ...   Romans 4:13-17 (ESV)

In the 1960's there was a group called the Byrds.  They had members like David Crosby and Roger McQuinn.  Guess artist with them at different times were names like Eric Clapton and Bob Dylan.   They did big-time music in my humble opinion.  One of the songs was Turn Turn Turn.   It was based on the scripture I am posting today.

For everything there is a season and a time for every matter under heaven:

2  a time to be born, and a time to die;

a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted;

3  a time to kill, and a time to heal;

a time to break down, and a time to build up;

4  a time to weep, and a time to laugh;

a time to mourn, and a time to dance;

5  a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together;

a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;

6  a time to seek, and a time to lose;

a time to keep, and a time to cast away;

7  a time to tear, and a time to sew;

a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;

8  a time to love, and a time to hate;

a time for war, and a time for peace.

In today’s. gospel  Jesus joins in public worship in the synagogue as a practicing Jew, heals the sick, drives out evil spirits, and prays privately.  People immediately notice that Jesus teaches with authority and heals with Divine power. Jesus explains the Scriptures with complete confidence, and when questioned by people, he answers with authority.
Jesus is using his real Divine authority to teach, empower, liberate, and heal others. In today’s Gospel, the evil spirit recognizes and loudly declares Jesus as the Messiah.  Jesus harsh, command, “Be quiet! Come out of him!” exorcises the demon who departs, obedient to His Divine authority.
Jesus did not use his authority and divine power to rule and control people, but to set them free. As Christians, we are sent out by Christ to preach the Good News, not to exclude, to condemn, or disempower.  He sends us out to destroy no one.  We are sent to give life, to give meaning and purpose, to give hope.  Taking our warning from today's Gospel, we,  as individuals must constantly be alert to the possibility that, like the Jewish scribes, we, too can easily fall into the trap of judging people, condemning them, and even excluding those who don't measure up.
The quality of our authority will be a factor of our love for people.  It will mean that we encounter people with respect, even, and particularly, those who don't respect us.  We meet them where they are, not from a stance of superiority, but presuming their good will and open to whatever insights into truth they might have.

Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4 and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.  Romans 5:1-5 (ESV)

 22 We are made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ. And this is true for everyone who believes, no matter who we are.  23 For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.

35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? 36 As it is written: “For your sake, we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.” 37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.  Romans 8:35-39 (NIV)

I thought a more traditional Scripture reading for Ash Wednesday was in order.

“Cry aloud; do not hold back; lift up your voice like a trumpet;
declare to my people their transgression,
to the house of Jacob their sins.
2  Yet they seek me daily and delight to know my ways,
as if they were a nation that did righteousness
and did not forsake the judgment of their God;
they ask of me righteous judgments;
they delight to draw near to God.

3  Why have we fasted, and you see it not?
Why have we humbled ourselves, and you take no knowledge of it?’
Behold, in the day of your fast you seek your own pleasure,1
and oppress all your workers.

4  Behold, you fast only to quarrel and to fight and to hit with a wicked fist.
Fasting like yours this day will not make your voice to be heard on high.

5  hIs such the fast that I choose, a day for a person to humble himself?
Is it to bow down his head like a reed, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him?
Will you call this a fast, and a day acceptable to the LORD?

6  “Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of wickedness,
to undo the straps of the yoke, to let the oppressed2 go free,
and to break every yoke?

7  Is it not to share your bread with the hungry and bring the homeless poor into your house;
when you see the naked, to cover him, and not to hide yourself from your own flesh?

8  Then shall your light break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall spring up speedily;
your righteousness shall go before you; the glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard.

9  Then you shall call, and the LORD will answer;
you shall cry, and he will say, ‘Here I am.’
If you take away the yoke from your midst,
the pointing of the finger, and speaking wickedness,

10  if you pour yourself out for the hungry and satisfy the desire of the afflicted,
then shall your light rise in the darkness and your gloom be as the noonday.

11  And the LORD will guide you continually and satisfy your desire in scorched places
and make your bones strong;
and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail.

12  And your ancient ruins shall be rebuilt;
you shall raise up the foundations of many generations;
you shall be called the repairer of the breach,
the restorer of streets to dwell in.

Isaiah 57: 1-12 (ESV)

In our first reading today, we hear the prophet Isaiah speaking the Lord’s words and intentions, stating that some who practice fasting and other actions as prescribed by the Law who , at the same time, commit actions that are sinful such as being angry towards one another, and quarreling over certain matters with their brothers and sisters. That is tantamount to being hypocrites, not truly believing in the Lord and doing the fast and other actions just for one’s own ego and benefits.

In our Gospel passage today, we the  Pharisees, complaining that the Lord’s disciples had not been fasting in the manner prescribed by the law of Moses, and especially that they did not follow the Law in the manner that the Pharisees themselves had done. Actually, they were using themselves as a benchmark and point of reference especially in condemning others for their lack of faith and obedience.

The Pharisees had lost the essence and meaning, the purpose of doing the fast and other faithful actions. In criticizing others for the difference in the way they lived their faith they had not done what the Lord had entrusted to them, the responsibility to teach and guide, to show, and the lead the way by their examples.

 Today’s readings call us to reflect on how we are going to make good use of this Lenten season. This is the time to prepare ourselves for the great celebrations at Holy Week and Easter. That is why we are reminded now that as we carry out our Lenten fast,  and other things we do in this period, we should remain focused on the Lord and not be distracted by other, less than noble pursuits just as the Pharisees had done.

In this season of Lent, let us remember those who are needy and those suffering, all because we have not yet overcome the fallout from the pandemic. Many people are still suffering daily and are struggling to make ends meet for themselves and for their families. If we are able to help and provide assistance, then why not? And when we do help, let us not look for fame and glory, or any praise from our actions.

Brothers and sisters, let us all do whatever we can in order to be good and faithful Christians, in showing the love of God to all those who are in need, let us all make our Lent observances meaningful and good,  dedicating ourselves to our fellow brothers and sisters, and ultimately to the Lord our Savior and God.

     Peter reminded the bishops, then known as elders in the earliest days of the Church, that they ought to be exemplary in their conduct and faith, so that by their faith and obedience to God, they might be good examples for their flock, helping and leading them down the right path towards God.

     Today, we are called to pray for our bishops, as well as our priests. We pray that with the heavy responsibilities they have been given, they might remain strong in faith, and firm in their beliefs, so as not to be overwhelmed by the many temptations and pressures surrounding them.

     Let us all give them our prayers, our support, and love, brothers and sisters that they may imitate the faith and examples of St. Peter, whose faith in the Lord was unwavering to the end. Although St. Peter himself did make mistakes and famously denied the Lord three times, but in his imperfections, he remained filled with love for God, and was genuinely remorseful for his actions.

The Way of Love

13
If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.  And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing.

Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful;2 6 it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away. When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways. For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known.

So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.  1Corinthians 13

As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man’s trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many. And the free gift is not like the result of that one man’s sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brought justification. For if, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.  Romans 5:15-17  (ESV)

27 Then what becomes of our boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? By a law of works? No, but by the law of faith. 28 For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law. 29 Or is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles also? Yes, of Gentiles also, 30 since God is one—who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith. 31 Do we then overthrow the law by this faith? By no means! Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.” So they said to him, “Then what sign do you do, that we may see and believe you? What work do you perform? Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’” Jesus then said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” They said to him, “Sir, give us this bread always.”

I will extol you, O LORD, for you have drawn me up and have not let my foes rejoice over me.
O LORD my God, I cried to you for help, and you have healed me.
O LORD, you have brought up my soul from Sheol; you restored me to life from among those who go down to the pit.1
Sing praises to the LORD, O you his saints, and give thanks to his holy name.

For his anger is but for a moment, and his favor is for a lifetime.
Weeping may tarry for the night, but joy comes with the morning.
As for me, I said in my prosperity, “I shall never be moved.”

By your favor, O LORD, you made my mountain stand strong;
you hid your face;
I was dismayed.
To you, O LORD, I cry, and to the Lord I plead for mercy:
“What profit is there in my death, if I go down to the pit?
Will the dust praise you?
Will it tell of your faithfulness?

Hear, O LORD, and be merciful to me!
O LORD, be my helper!”
You have turned for me my mourning into dancing;
you have loosed my sackcloth
and clothed me with gladness,

that my glory may sing your praise and not be silent.
O LORD my God, I will give thanks to you forever!

Psalm 30 (ESV)

Maybe Clem got this idea from Romans 8...

In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words; and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

-did you catch the context?

If you read the preceding verses its all about how the people following Moses (baptized into him) screwed up in every conceivable way.  Not little mistakes-- MAJOR error.  The worst kinds of mistakes.  Paul is saying-- "don't be those guys."  They were provided in scripture as (bad) examples-- what NOT to do.  They had the Law.  The had the Law giver (Moses).  God wasn't pleased with MOST of them.  They fell to every kind of temptation (just as we do-- as common to man).  The verse is actually saying-- you can't do worse than they did.

“A little while, and you will see me no longer; and again a little while, and you will see me.” So some of his disciples said to one another, “What is this that he says to us, A little while, and you will not see me, and again a little while, and you will see me; and, "because I am going to the Father’?” So they were saying, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? We do not know what he is talking about.” Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, “Is this what you are asking yourselves, what I meant by saying, ‘A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me’? Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy. When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you. In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you. Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.  John 16: 16-24  (ESV)

it is amazing that through these verses of scripture the spirits in question knew who He was before all others knew. They have got to follow His commands. They have to have permission to enter a body. They cannot exist outside of a body or Hell. and they do not like the conditions of Hell.

What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.  James 2:14-18  (ESV)

This scriptures are a big can of worms.....especially when trying to exclaim "faith and faith alone" can get one salvation.

Very true and I believe I posted this a year ago also.   I am still on the fence on this.   Can faith alone be salvation?  Can works alone give Salvation? Is it absolute you need faith and work?  These have been vexing for a few centuries and have caused division after division within Christianity.   The academic side of me can make arguments on all positions.   But do any of us really know what God wants from us to gain salvation?  That is where I get hung up and that just means opening more cans of worms

To me, the answer lies in the OT version of salvation...iow's salvation was still through faith and faith brought obedience...the difference in the NT is Christ.  But still faith that results in obedience...sorry for butting in on your discussion, I will disappear again, so that everyone is happy.

** Yes, one can,,,,we are told Faith and Faith alone is the only way to heaven. The scripture you were speaking of and the reason I jabbed at it a little, is that so many people use it push a "works" agenda or a combination agenda of both "Faith and Works"

In reality, when one is saved, they immediately receive the Holy Spirit and are made a new person who will search for the truth on His walk with GOD through a sanctification period toward a final righteousness.

The works this scripture speaks of is the works the Holy Spirit gives one to do. The type of work is chosen for you except being a Elder(pastor)!. How much work you do is up to you. know this, you will be judged for this work at the Bema Seat Judgments. What rewards are you going to gain or lose will depend on the type of word you do after you have been justified by the gift of God.

reminds me of James 4:1 (HCSB) What is the source of wars and fights among you? Don’t they come from the cravings that are at war within you?

which is why Romans 12:3 is so important (HCSB) For by the grace given to me, I tell everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he should think. Instead, think sensibly, as God has distributed a measure of faith to each one.

 For "everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!”  Romans 10: 13-15 (ESV)

How do you square this with Matt 7:21?

Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.

Mr E I honestly do not try to square them to each other.   Different authors of different books hearing things differently would be my starting point.

We could spend an entire lifetime trying to reconcile all the little and big contradictory statements.  That really is not the purpose of the Bible though, is it?

But, for me I have looked at these: one is giving you a general statement to show you the value of believing, the other is a warning that there are some things in life you can do that are unforgivable to the point it will preclude you from heaven even if you call the Lord's name.   That's the short version.

There is a difference between calling out to God in brokenness and repentance, and claiming He is Lord without any meaning behind the words other than to pretend to have our fire insurance paid up.

Yes, there is Lori.
Interesting phrase:  pretend to have our fire insurance paid up.   At the start of the riding season, there were a few bike blessings I was asked to help with.  I made it to a couple.  At one this big ole burly guy, dressed to look like he was out of a biker movie or TV show.  He ambles by me towards his bike and says, well padre (I am not a father) I guess I better go pay up my life insurance with a little ole blessing from you all.  Better safe than sorry, ya know.

I just did my best chappy smile and nodded my head and went ahead with it all.  Inside I was going "Really that's what you consider this, nothing more than an insurance policy  encase you do something stupid."

Heres the thing with bikers, so many are wrapped up in their macho image, it is hard to know the depths of their faith and belief, but boy sometimes the outward appearance makes you wonder.

Actually, there is/was (haven't kept track but have a friend who was part of it so I guess this is my call to reconnect with him) Biker church in our area.  I never went but not only have a friend who helped start it but have another friend who went.  As I hear, it was on fire for God, but you are right, just thought it might interest you.  One of the
"Biker Gangs" affiliated with it called themselves the SONS of GOD...they were well known in the area but we have moved to a nearby town so like I said, haven't kept up.

How can a young man keep his way pure?

By guarding it according to your word.

10  With my whole heart I seek you;

let me not wander from your commandments!

11  I have stored up your word in my heart,

that I might not sin against you.

12  Blessed are you, O LORD;

teach me your statutes!

13  With my lips I declare

all the rules3 of your mouth.

14  In the way of your testimonies I delight

as much as in all riches.

15  I will meditate on your precepts

and fix my eyes on your ways.

16  I will delight in your statutes;

I will not forget your word.

Psalms 119: 9-16 (ESV)

For no other reason than I like the overall message.   No deep message on my part. :-)

Bonus scripture for the day.

I like this scripture reading and was reminded again of it when listening to an old Byrds album

3:1   To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
3:2   A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;
3:3   A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;
3:4   A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
3:5   A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
3:6   A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;
3:7   A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
3:8   A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.

Good one Mark, I thought I would subject the difference in scripture on this one...

(KJV) "Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth."

I do not understand why they who changed the ESV version left out "Believe" phrase in the first part of the scripture, but it is different and even I had to read it several times to understand what it said. The "If you can"  question could be anything.

Because I felt it needed to be presented.

5 “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 7 And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. 9 “This, then, is how you should pray: “ ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, 10 your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us today our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’ 14 For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.  Matthew 6:5-15 (NIV)

12 Who has measured the waters in the hollow of His hand, And marked off the heavens by the span, And calculated the dust of the earth by the measure, And weighed the mountains in a balance And the hills in a pair of scales? 13 Who has directed the Spirit of the LORD, Or as His counselor * has informed Him?  Isaiah 40: 12-13

9 You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ. 10 But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life[d] because of righteousness. 11 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of[e] his Spirit who lives in you. 12 Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have an obligation—but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it. 13 For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live.
14 For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.  Romans 8:9-14 (NIV)
