"Does God have a Soul (H: nephesh)?"
Dictionary def: "the spiritual or immaterial part of a human being or animal, regarded as immortal"
Biblical definition: Gen 2:7.."And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul."
Gen 1:27.."So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them."
Here we see three of the many verses the Bible shows that man does have a soul.
*Psalm 62:5.."My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him."
*Psalm 104:1.."Bless the LORD, O my soul. O LORD my God, thou art"
*Luke 1:46.."And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord,"
Man has a fleshly body (body/container) and a Soul. There is an upgrade( a spirit) that is available for anyone who believes in the Gospel of Jesus Christ
(1 Cor 15:1-4). Whether this spirit is part of the Holy Spirit indwelling every TRUE Christian, it is not known for sure but I suspect that it is.
The fleshly body dies and is that part of man that is buried in the ground. The Soul is immortal and resides in one of two places after the death of man's body.
Man's body does contain the DNA (building blocks of the body)and it also contains the physical characteristics of the person (i.e. color of hair, skin, facial characteristics, etc).
The Soul contains the information of the mind, their emotions (love, hate, fears, etc.) and all those other "human" qualities we say mankind has.
The question is: Does GOD have these qualities that He gave mankind?
If we look to the Bible for answers, God, Himself tells us He has a SOUL. Yet, there are NO verses that directly assign a Soul to GOD as John 4:24 does for a Spirit.."God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth."
Jeremiah 32:41.."Yea, I will rejoice over them to do them good, and I will plant them in this land assuredly with my whole heart and with my whole soul."
Leviticus 26:11.."And I will set my tabernacle among you: and my soul shall not abhor you."
Judges 10:16.."And they put away the strange gods from among them, and served the LORD: and his soul was grieved for the misery of Israel."
As God is spirit and has no physical form, the 'physical human characteristics', we can lay aside.
However, the 'immaterial human characteristics' our Soul can be linked to GOD. In many verses, we see He loves, He can express His emotions in anger, as a mother hen, as a husband, as a father, as a son, etc.
In this sense, GOD does have a soul!
