Title: Where in Scripture?
Post by: guest24 on August 31, 2019, 01:28:53 pm
Anyone who knows me knows I am a stickler for what scripture really does say.  I am also a stickler for consistency.  To that end, someone recently brought up the discussion of self defense or defence of a family or friend who is being threatened....is it okay or not from the standpoint of scripture?  In the discussion it was demanded that scripture of a NT believer defending themselves or others be brought forth.  As I thought on this topic the question came to me, where in scripture was any NT Christian brought up that was put in a situation in which they needed to defend self or others that was NOT about their stand for Christ.

IOW's we are trying to compare apples to oranges in the question as it is usually asked.  We want evidence that it is okay or not okay to defend oneself or a family member when all scripture talks about through example is those who suffer for Christ not for self or personal attacks of family members.  Is there a scripture I am not thinking about that shows how a NT believer acted when they or their family were personally attacks that was not about their stand for Christ?

Now before we start the discussion, there are passages that talk about not retaliating that many people like to parade on this topic but we aren't talking about retaliation, we are talking about defending ones self or a family member in something like a car jacking or home invasion, or even a potential kidnapping. not a slap on the cheek for being stupid or falsely accused of something

I can only think of the scripture that talks about the robber and the home owner not allowing his house to be broken into. The scripture talks about keeping watch but doesn't mention the exact things that the home owner can or can't do in that situation. It says that if the home owner had been awake, he would not have allowed his house to be broken into. So if the home owner would not allow his house to be broken into then obviously he/she would have to do something to prevent that.

Matt. 24:43 But know this: if the house owner had known in what watch the robber would come, he would have been awake and would not have allowed his house to be broken into.

I was in that situation before. I was home alone at night with my three small children. A group of teenagers were at my door trying to get in. They had already broken into my elderly neighbor's apartment and attacked and robbed her.

My husband had bought a small gun. I think it was a 22. I wasn't worried about my possessions. I was worried for the safety of my children. So I got the gun and I told them through the door that I had a gun and that they better not try to break in because I wouldn't hesitate to use it. After a few more verbal threats they decided to walk away and leave.

Exodus 22:2-3
Luke 22:36-38..... These verses are referring to missionaries.
There are many more indirect verses.

Be assured, self defense is allowed.
