Title: Who has pets?
Post by: patrick jane on August 10, 2018, 07:50:07 pm
First, I love ALL animals and critters. God's creatures caught in a world of people, trying to scrape by. LOL, that's not what the thread is about but hey. Tell us all about your pets, past pets and all things pets.

I have one cat, my second. I had my first cat Ziggy for 12 years and he passed. He was a black, gray and white tabby and most beautiful for a boy. He was the most loving and touching, as in physical touch that I have ever known.

So it took a year and my ex girlfriend and still good friend, Melissa, called and said she had a very pretty kitten. Calico. When I got there 20 minutes later she was up in a tree !!!

Anyway, my mom has a cat and two old dogs that I absolutely love more than life. Small dogs but I like all sizes. Nobody can ever convince me that cats are smarter than dogs. No way. Dogs are the smartest 4 legged animals around, imo.

I have always had dogs/cats. Right now I have Sally a 8 y.o. female Dalmatian and Summer a 2 y.o. female Basenji: both are rescues. I am going through a divorce, so my ex will keep Summer. I will be relocating to Texas later this year after I retire and plan to get a cat as a companion for Sally in our new place. I can’t imagine a life without a pet.

Hello Lora, I think you're my Facebook friend. Welcome and thank you for you story. I sometimes think this is the last pet because I can't go through losing another. But as you said and I just thought yesterday, I can't imagine NOT having a pet. I will always have one; they are part of who I am.

I love you posts on FB drawing attention to needy cats and dogs and especially your inspirational short videos. Fell free to start your own thread (topic) about rescue animals or anything at all about pets and animals. You can post videos and memes etc. I'll show you how or another member will.

I hope you keep coming back and visit a few minutes here and there. Read some posts and explore a little when you have time.

Advantages of adopting shelter dogs

https://www.sheknows.com/pets-and-animals/articles/815859/advantages-of-adopting-shelter-dogs-1

Thinking about getting a dog for your family? If you are like many, you may be considering buying a dog from a pet store or breeder. However, before you make a decision, consider the benefits of adopting a shelter dog. Though pet store or breeders' canines may seem the more advantageous choice, rescue dogs can be equally rewarding and perhaps an even better addition to your family. Here is why you should adopt a shelter dog.

(https://3169.createaforum.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fcdn.skim.gs%2Fimage%2Fupload%2Fv1456339050%2Fmsi%2Fsad-scared-dog-at-dog-pound_wdn2fj.jpg&hash=2644f94a77f9769bfa139fec52d00e6e057831dd)

How do dogs end up in shelters?

Each year millions of innocent dogs and cats are tortured, neglected, abandoned, and abused.

These "castoffs" or strays struggle to survive under stressful and, often, horrific circumstances – alone at the mercy of the elements, without food or water, without the care or aid of human beings, without love and compassion, and without hope of companionship, friendship, help, or support from people.

Ultimately, these animals end up in municipal animal shelters or welfare organizations, and if they are too weak or ill, or in any way display aggressive behavior (keep in mind that they are terrified and traumatized in their new environment), they will be euthanized.

Some of the animals in animal shelters or rescue organizations have been born and raised in puppy mills and never experienced life outside a crate. Others are the inadvertent victims of greedy and irreputable backyard breeders.

Others have been someone's family members and have been surrendered to an animal welfare organization or shelter because of various reasons (i.e., divorce, separation, relocation, financial loss and so on) that we may never comprehend.

Pet stores, breeders, and puppy mills

There are many reasons to adopt a rescue dog rather than purchasing one from a breeder or pet store. Many people assume that if they buy a dog from either of these sources, it will be healthier and sounder.

This is a misconception, as many dogs sold to pet stores come from puppy mills where, until they are sold, are kept in deplorable conditions, confined in crates that are small and cramped and piled upon each other, fed inadequate diets, given dirty or contaminated water, and provided with little, if any veterinary care.

Having adopted many rescued puppy mill dogs myself, I have experienced the many serious health and behavioral issues these poor dogs encounter.

Shelter dogs deserve a second chance

Many people assume that if they adopt a dog from a shelter, there must be something wrong with it. This is not true at all. Many of the dogs that end up in shelters are there simply because their human owners have been ignorant, cruel, lazy, irresponsible, and neglectful.

These owners regard their dogs as chattel rather than as sentient, loyal, and loving friends and family members. Neglectful or abusive owners do not provide their dogs with attention, interaction, socialization, or obedience training, and have not treated their pets with the respect, appreciation, and love they deserve.

In many cases, the dogs surrendered to shelters have been the loving and loyal members of a family and now find themselves not only in an unfamiliar environment but also restrained in a "cell" or kennel with many other frightened, barking, growling, anxious, yipping, and howling dogs. Imagine the stress and terror they must feel!

Advantages of adopting a shelter dog

1. You'll save a life
One of the most significant benefits of adopting a shelter dog is that you are saving the life of a sentient creature that is in desperate need of a loving home. Innocent and vulnerable, she depends upon human beings for her care and well-being and will learn to trust and love her "guardians."

2. Sense of fulfillment
It is very fulfilling to save a life and watch it blossom and flourish with love, care, appreciation, and respect.

3. Improved quality of life
Rescue dogs have the ability to lift your spirits as well as improve the quality -- and increase the longevity -- of your life. The health benefits associated with adopting a companion animal like a dog are many and even scientifically substantiated. Your furry friend will benefit both your physical and emotional health.

4. Unconditional love
A rescued dog knows he has been "saved" and is grateful, loyal, and unconditionally loving. He is eager and content to become a beloved member of your family.

Adopting a rescue dog may require more time, attention, effort, and patience from an adopter than a dog that has not been abused or neglected. However, the joy and gratification to be derived from saving a dog in need are boundless.

THE CATCH-PHRASE FOR RANDY GRIM IS “UNLIKELY HERO.”
https://www.strayrescue.org/

For decades, Grim has been trying to call national attention to the scourge of abandoned, abused and feral street dogs. Now he is succeeding—in the national media, in legislatures, where others with more clout have failed — or never tried at all. Why so “unlikely” a hero?

It takes an extra dose of real courage -- Mark Twain’s kind, the kind needed to act when you really are afraid -- to mount daily rescue operations on some of this country’s most dangerous streets.

It takes an extra dose of courage for Grim even to publicize these dogs’ world of misery. He is crippled by panic attacks and phobias (of public places, parties, elevators, driving). After rescuing his first street dog, he couldn’t look away. “How can I?” he asks. “

Each one says, ‘don’t leave me here.’” And so the man who must pop Xanax to walk through an airport refuses to leave a starving, terror-stricken German Shepherd on a dark, icy and stormy St. Louis street, even when a threatening tenement resident has him on the business end of a gun.

Likening his position to captain of a punctured life-raft, Grim rescues beaten, feral and abandoned city dogs from St. Louis’s meanest streets. These are the untouchables, the dogs other shelters, many with multi-million-dollar budgets, call “irredeemable.”

To date, Grim has rescued many thousands of street dogs, many suffering from gunshot wounds or amputations, others simply scared. Almost by force of his crippling anxiety and phobias, (possessed of what one reporter called a “sly and off-beat sense of humor,”

Grim is, oddly, one of the funniest people on the planet) Randy is a very special man who against all odds is gaining national attention for an underground epidemic, a national disgrace. By redeeming the dogs, he’s redeemed himself. Something in what Grim is doing is catching on, and mattering.

Randy Grim officially founded Stray Rescue as a non-profit organization in 1998, but that’s not where the story begins. If you ask Randy’s family, they will tell you that he started rescuing animals when he was a five year-old!

Wanting to get closer to his dream of working with animals, in 1990 Randy owned and operated “Bark Avenue,” a dog grooming shop in Lafayette Square, where he would see stray dogs roaming the streets – scared, hungry and in desperate need of help. It quickly became clear to him that there were simply no resources available to help get them off the streets to safety, and he just couldn’t stand to see them suffering.

Taking matters into his own hands, Randy opened his door, rescued as many dogs as he could and started taking them into his home – nursing them back to health and giving them to any friend or family member who would agree to take them. Randy’s philosophy has always been, “if I don’t help these animals, who will?”

About eight years later, Randy spent his life-savings to invest in a building on 18th Street that was built-out as a shelter, and Stray Rescue of St. Louis was officially born! The 18th Street shelter is still in operation today – housing 9 dogs.

Through Randy’s sheer will, dedication and love of the street dogs, Stray Rescue has grown and evolved into the organization it is today. The state-of-the-art Pine St. shelter opened in 2010, usually operating at full capacity.

Stray Rescue also has 60 staff members (including an on-site trauma center), a legion of 300 foster parents and more than 1,000 volunteers from around the community. On average, Stray Rescue saves and adopts out 3,000 companion animals a year.

That is so sweet tj. We had a stray kitten that stayed in our fenced backyard all day but we didn't know until nightfall and she ran in the house with dogs when they came back from going potty !!! She was so little and scrawny but she wasn't scared of people or the dogs. No clue where she came from but we put up signs for two weeks looking for the owner.

Her name is Gretchen, after my Grandma, and she's three now an orange tabby, lol. I'm glad your Jasmine turned out big and healthy. I have a Calico named Lucy with two black eyes !!! She is so sweet. If I ever had the money I would have a big property and care for any and all animals and pay good vets to work with me, plus I would go to veterinary college.

We have three outside cats that we keep for hunting.
Three inside cats our youngest has promised to take with him when he moves out...he better.
A Bernese Mountain Dog...such a lover, sort of a rescue.

Over the years, our eldest who is an animal fanatic has talked us into a variety of cats and dogs as well as....anols, a tree frog, a couple of different lizards, a iguana, two chinchillas as well as two sets of chinchilla twins, many fish, and anything I might be forgetting.

When I was a young child we lived in Eastern Nigeria and we a pet monkey. My older brother named him Congress which we now both find to be funny and prophetic. Our Labrador mix dog would let the monkey ride around on his back. We also had many pet chameleons which were fascinating to watch.

So, I like finding God in every situation so let me share with you a story that shows us the importance of listening to God.

When I was growing up, I was allowed (miracle) to keep a pup.  He was half collie and half who knows and was mine from before he could open his eyes.  I was so thrilled with the pup that I spent all the time I could with him.  I would sit out on the hill in front of the barn and cross my legs, set the pup in front of me as far as I could reach then call him.  He couldn't see yet but he would follow my voice to the warmth of my waiting affections.  Time and time and time again I would do this.  The pup grew into a dog and that dog would come when he heard me call no matter what he was doing.  He had learned the sound of my voice by coming every time I called even when he couldn't see me.  This is how we learn the sound of God's voice.  We come when we hear Him even if we can't see Him.

Well, one day, my dog got loose.  We lives on a state highway and so this was a dangerous thing if he wasn't trekking the woods with me.  I called and called but he didn't come. I was heartbroken.  All day long I called and he did not come.  All evening I called and he did not come.  By morning I figured I would call one last time and if he didn't come I would know for sure that something bad had happened to him.  So I went out and called....nothing.  I called again and heard a faint whimper.  I called and listened again...again a faint whimper.  As it so happened, I went across the road to the swamp area and found the dog with his chain caught on a log.  He knew he would be in trouble for going across the road and yet he also knew that I was calling and he needed to get back to me.  So many times we do this to God.  We know we need him but we also know that we did wrong.

May we today not only hear His voice and answer but may we always come running when He calls even if we know we did wrong...for there, we will find the full scope of a Love that will not end.

Just thought if we were sharing pet stories I would share that with you all.

So, I like finding God in every situation so let me share with you a story that shows us the importance of listening to God.

Since I've been saved and even before that there are always periods of time where I feel far away from God. I know it's me and not God, it's my heart and mind that is far away and God is always right here with me. I'm going through one of those periods now of feeling far away after feeling so close to God for most of 2018. Tomorrow is the one year date of my aunt Joelle passing away. Maybe that is affecting me. I know I'm getting away from God when I stop posting scripture. Good story Lori.

I can't believe I forgot to tell one of my favorite pet stories....we had several different rabbits.  One the neighbor said the rabbit asked her to let him out which is how he disappeared, one that was a retired magic rabbit...and one that was a beautiful brown flemish giant that was litter trained.  At night we would cage him to make sure he stayed safe but when we were there, he had run of the house.  One Easter morning, our older children got up before their baby brother, opened the cage, letting Cadbury  (yes that was his name) out of the cage then tried to convince their baby brother that the rabbit was the real Easter bunny....lol what a great day that was!

That's great, lol. Listen to this one. My uncle has a down syndrome son named Chris and when he was about 8 they and the family went to the Zoo. They looked at all the animals and made all the stops, the ape house, the reptile house, the big cats and the bears and the penguins etc. They  spent the day there and when they got home Chris wanted to go to his room and was acting strange. They walked in a few minutes later to see a small penguin on the fllor standing there, Hah !!! Chris tucked the penguin in his backpack and took it home. When they called the Zoo the Zoo hung up on them thinking it was a prank call !!! They finally came and picked him up and the penguin was OK.

that is awesome...I could see our eldest doing something like that.  When he was in Afghanistan he was talking about finding a beautiful big scorpion...he picked it up and was playing with it while all his buddies were freaking out.  Our daughter is obsessed with spiders but is scared to death of ants...haha...I can't wait to share your story with Brian, he will love it.

So yesterday I was sitting at the computer and I looked up and out the window to see a turkey running across the yard.  The turkey was alone which I thought was a bit strange only to discover that one of our cats was chasing it....the look on that stupid cats face was hilarious when the turkey took to flight leaving the cat empty and alone....lol  I love living back here in the "wild" of Ohio.

Rescued baby crows return each spring to say "Hello"

This is the story of four rescued baby crows that were raised by a loving family. They learned to say "hello" and how to become independent. Eventually they were accepted by a family of wild crows. Even though they fly south each winter, they always return each spring to literally say hello to the family that saved them.

I was just reading some of the posts and these scriptures came to mind.

Job 12:7 But ask the animals, and they will instruct you;
ask the birds of the air, and they will tell you.
8 Or speak to the earth, and it will teach you;
let the fish of the sea inform you.
9 Which of all these does not know
that the hand of the LORD has done this?
10 The life of every living thing is in His hand,
as well as the breath of all mankind.
11 Does not the ear test words
as the tongue tastes its food?
12 Wisdom is found with the elderly,
and understanding comes with long life.

Little Silky is a strong little boy. He's been blind for 18 months and getting weaker and weaker but when you go to clean the crusty boogers from his eyes he shows us how much strength and fight he has in him. He is so sweet guys and we know he won't be here much longer. Little Scooter is getting old to and coughs and hacks a lot and has trouble breathing, but thank God no diabetes or any other problems. They are both 14 years old and we love them so much.

I have had pets all my life.   Currently an adorable 3-year-old cat.  My son named her Quinn.  He saved her from a shelter.  He had intentions of it being his cat but he moved and no pets allowed.  So I have a cat.

I have had 2 different dogs that are legendary in my life and one awesome cat that I had 19 years I loved probably too much.  Right before that cat, I had a purebred Siamese cat that lived 21 years.

My cat was a rescue cat from a stray cat. She was the runt of the litter and very sickly. We actually saved three others from that litter too, all males. Two of the males looked just like Jasmine. Jasmine chose me so I've had her since she was just a little ball of fur.

Hello, I hope you are well, and your pets. God bless you -

We have a cat we would love to give to someone...the dumbest cat you ever saw...hey that might be a selling point...the dumbest cat in the world, might get some publicity if we hold a contest.  The prize could be the cat himself.

Trump Silent Running Video:
https://rumble.com/vb5dzb-trump-silent-running-by-justin-bellucci.html

Silent Running

Take the children and yourself
And hide out in the cellar
By now the fighting will be close at hand

Don't believe the church and state
And everything they tell you
Believe in me, I'm with the high command

Can you hear me, can you hear me running?
Can you hear me running, can you hear me calling you?
Can you hear me, can you hear me running?
Can you hear me running, can you hear me calling you?

There's a gun and ammunition
Just inside the doorway
Use it only in emergency

Better you should pray to God
The Father and the Spirit
Will guide you and protect from up here

Can you hear me, can you hear me running?
Can you hear me running, can you hear me calling you?
Can you hear me, can you hear me running?
Can you hear me running, can you hear me calling you?

Swear allegiance to the flag
Whatever flag they offer
Never hint at what you really feel

Teach the children quietly
For some day sons and daughters
Will rise up and fight while we stood still

Can you hear me, can you hear me running?
Can you hear me running, can you hear me calling you?
Can you hear me, can you hear me running?
Can you hear me running, can you hear me calling you?

Can you hear me, can you hear me running?
Can you hear me running, can you hear me calling you?
Can you hear me running (can you hear me calling you?)
(Can you hear me) hear me calling you?
(Can you hear me running) hear me running babe?
(Can you hear me running) hear me running?
Calling you, calling you

Hi Patrick!

We have 5 cats, one of which had 8 kittens.  We still have 3 of the kittens, but we'll find homes for them, too!  We also have 1 dog and 5 fish.  It's a 75-gal. aquarium.  Little Bit is my favorite cat and he is quite personable.  Psalm is the one who had kittens.  She's the youngest of the cats, but not the kittens.  Zoey is a mix of Greyhound and Golden Retriever.  The other cats are Precious {the girls named her}, Baby and Ariel.  They are mainly calico, but another is gray, and then one is black & white.

Well, there you go.  They are all full of vigor and love, except for the fish.  Will chat again soon.

The Ark Encounter - Kentucky

10 minutes
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PeNOURXWCmM&list=WL&index=103

The Ark Encounter was opened on July 7, 2016 and it's the full replica based on a Biblical scale. It's 510 feet long, 85 feet wide and 51 feet high. It's operated by Answers in Genesis, a group that also runs the Creation Museum in Petersburg, Kentucky.

This is a theme park, zoo, restaurant and museum. It's located in Grant County Kentucky and is open year-round. There were well over one million visitors during it's first year of operation from July 2016 - July 2017. There are models of Dinosaurs, massive timbers in the center and multiple decks with attractions.

I have two pups and love them so much.

What do you think of this-- true story that happened yesterday.  We have a young gal that works for us and she has a puppy that became sick over the weekend.  Yesterday she had to call in sick to work to take this puppy to the vet and they did a bunch of tests with the final determination that the dog needs surgery. The estimated cost is$7000.

What would you do?  What should she do?

Bring the Dog home and put it on Hospice. Let the LORD decide when it will die.

Mr. E I do not want to be legended as a Hardbutt or something but having so many animals around me, IO have found there is a limit within resources and money that one can spend on an animal that will likely die anyway. In these cases, I always put that decision in God's hands unless the animal is in pain. Of course even then, they will die on time (God's Time) just like you and I.

-t'was a belly problem not a bone problem.  The dog had eaten a number of foreign objects he found while playing on the beach.  Many owners take their pets down to dog beach and let them off leash to play, as with this one.  It had swallowed several large (five inch long) chunks of rubber tire that had washed ashore, as well as a rotting fish that had within it a four inch long fish hook.  All these things and more were removed surgically.

puppies are puppies and big puppies are just bigger problems.  The old saying- 'this too shall pass" was not true in this particular case.

Have one dog that seems to have the mange or some allergy. Put black oil of her, all over and she seems to be getting better. Some of the old cures work!

This is a special time for our family as we are in the process of adopting at least one dog, maybe two. They are small dogs that don't shed much and one is Buck, he's 8 years old. The other one is Barney and he's 5 years old.

The place we are adopting from helps Seniors find pets and the pets have been rescued most of the time, or abandoned. We will love these little guys like they've never known before and they will bring us so much joy here at home. We have a fenced back yard and a doggie door.

We lost our two beloved dogs last year and it still hurts but they had excellent lives and tons of love . . . and treats.  :D I'm excited but I don't want to get my hopes up too much because small dogs get adopted quickly.

We picked up two dogs today. We got Buck who we knew about, he's 8 years old and so sweet. Then we looked at Barney but they had a few more and one is a Maltese and we had a Maltese back in the early 80s into the 90s. We fell in love with her, Emma.

So we brought them home and they are settling in now. Life is good, thank you Lord.

recently acquired another Great Pyrenees who developed a sudden lose of hair....Used medicine for mites, fleas, ticks and mange... Nothing worked, it seemed she was going to scratch herself to her death...Rem, an old adage I had used from time to time, I tried it...Used/burnt motor oil rubbed in all over her including her head. Hey, it worked again..Now she has a pretty white coat of hair all over the places that she scratched off.

Hello Blade, how is your dog, still going strong? I'm losing my beautiful, sweet Calico cat right now. She got sick two days ago and she has very labored breathing. I'm afraid she won't recover but we keep praying. Her name is Lucy and she is almost 13 years old. She had the best life I could give her with love, food, treats and a big house. It's so sad to see her not eat and get weaker.
