Title: THE SINS OF THE WORLD
Post by: doug on October 08, 2020, 12:07:50 pm
1 John 2:1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:

2:2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for our's only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

John spoke of Jesus as being the propitiation or the appeasement for the sins of the world.

John 1:29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

John the baptist identified Jesus as the Lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world. God promised to provide the sacrificial lamb to Abraham (Genesis 22:7-8).

1 John 4:14 And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world.

4:15 Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God.

It is to be noted that when John speaks of Christ being sent to be the Saviour of the world in verse 14 above, the next verse links confession of Jesus as the Son of God, which was required of Israel (Matthew 10:32 Matthew 16:15-16 John 4:42).

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

3:17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

3:18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

John, in verse 16 and 17 above, speaks of Christ loving the world and being sent to save the world.

In verse 18 Israel had to believe on Christ, believe only in his name. The gospel Israel had to believe was the gospel of the kingdom (Matthew 4:23), in which, Christ would establish his kingdom on earth and reign with believing Israel; and that Jesus is the Christ, the Messiah, the Son of God. This can be seen in John 20:31 below:

John 20:31 But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.

God also purposed that the world would be blessed in the kingdom on earth:

Zechariah 8:22 Yea, many people and strong nations shall come to seek the LORD of hosts in Jerusalem, and to pray before the LORD.

8:23 Thus saith the LORD of hosts; In those days it shall come to pass, that ten men shall take hold out of all languages of the nations, even shall take hold of the skirt of him that is a Jew, saying, We will go with you: for we have heard that God is with you.

Jesus would take away the sins of the world, by which the Gentiles could be justified unto eternal life; the Gentiles, would however, have to go through Israel. Only to Paul was it revealed that all could be justified by faith in Christ and his shed blood by the cross, apart from Israel.

Jesus told the twelve disciples that the prophets spoke of his death and resurrection (Luke 18:31-33) but the meaning was hid from them and they did not understand it (Luke 18:34).

How God could take away the sin of the world and remain just was not yet made known.

All that the death and resurrection of Christ would accomplish was not known until revealed to Paul (1 Corinthians 2:8).

2 Corinthians 5:19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.

Jesus revealed to Paul that by the cross sin was not being imputed or reckoned to the world.

The word of this reconciliation that is preached must be believed. The gospel that Christ died for our sins and rose for our justification must be believed (Romans 4:25).

By the cross God could be just and the justifier of those who trust in Christ Jesus and his blood (Romans 3:24-26).
