Our Flat Earth Experiment
« on: July 27, 2019, 05:41:27 pm »
I had mentioned a few weeks ago that we would be buying some items while in the US (vacation), and bringing them back so we could perform an experiment at our leisure. We are back now and have the stuff, but we needed connectors for the vinyl tubing. Finally found them at a little hardware shop in town, the guy said that we would have to heat the tubing in hot water to expand the ends to make it fit over the connector. So that is what we did this afternoon. See attached.

To bring everyone up to date who did not read @Brett 's experiment idea (originally posted as "Newby Question), I will post it below. Do not get me started on the typos and grammatical errors--I have learned to live in peace with those as he lives in peace with my complete lack of mathematical capabilities:

"My wife (Suvel) is a FEer and I am not, but I'm openly investigating.

I have considered for a while a simple physical test that most could do themselves to prove one way or the other and want some feedback on the concept.

The idea is to use a water level (see picture) and a lazer to test for curvature.

The idea is to link three water level columns with 1000 feet of tubing at equal distances (column, 500 feet, column, 500 feet last column).

Given the curvature calcs (8" per mile) there should be a 3/4 inch deflection at the midpoint of these three columns of water.  (~8/5280 * 500 = 0.75)

So if we could set this up and aim a strong lazer light at the end point column's water levels, the middle column's water level should be approx 3/4 of an inch higher, if curvature is real.

Where am I going wrong here?

Or is this a way to test if curvature is true or missing?"

someone give you that experiment to determine curvature of the earth. It is hard for a reason..to keep you from finding the truth.

Distance is key and math can prove it. one does not need a model other that to prove the math.

If the earth drops away at 8" for every mile squared divided by 12" then in a 2 mile area, the drop should be ? 5.3 feet? [(8*(2x2))/12]

Is it OK if I move this to the Flat Earth forum later @suvel?

Yes of course. I cannot get used to the forum here, and where is best to post.

I guess the experiment went well.
