Lasers are regularly bounced off reflectors left on the moon and validate the distance from the earth to the moon as about 240,000 miles.  This shows the moon and thus the sun aren't close. 

We know the moon isn't a light source because of a single fact.  A source of light has no shadows on it's surface because it's own light dissipates any shadows there.  looking at the moon through a telescope we can see shadows on the moons surface and watch those shadows move over time.
