The Accuser…
In Job we see that Satan is roaming the earth. (Job 1:7) He also comes before the Lord.  In Zechariah 3:1 we see Satan coming once again before the Lord of lords and King of kings this time to accuse Joshua before the Lord.  Being an accuser of the brethren seems to be one of his specialties. (Revelations 12:10; Job 2:1-6)  Notice that Joshua did not rebuke Satan for his accusations but rather God Himself rebuked Satan. (Zechariah 3:2)  In Jude 1:9 even the archangel let God rebuke Satan and did not do it himself.  When we are being accused by Satan we have an advocate to speak on our behalf.  Jesus Christ is our advocate. (I John 2:1-2; Job 16:19; Romans 8:34; Romans 8:1; I Timothy 2:5; Hebrews 7:25; Hebrews 9:24; Hebrews 4:14; Hebrews 9:12-15; Hebrews 7:27; Hebrews 8:6; I Timothy 2:5)  God in His wisdom allowed for another advocate as well, that of the Holy Spirit. (John 14:16; John 15:26; John 16:7; Romans 8:26-27)  Currently the Christ is in heaven advocating before the Father on our behalf while the Holy Spirit is dwelling within us and even speaks the things in prayer that we ourselves lack words for.  The importance of this is that we do not reject our advocate, (Hebrews 12:24) the three in one.  (Matthew 28:19; Luke 3:22; John 14:26; John 15:26; Romans 8:9; II Corinthians 13:14; Ephesians 1:17; Ephesians 2:18)
Joshua didn’t need to do anything but be obedient and willing to allow God to move within him.  In fact God did work within Joshua, he took off the sin nature and put on a cleansed one.  Like Joshua we need cleansed by the Christ.  Psalms 51:2; I John 1:9; Psalms 51:7; Psalms 51:10; Ezekiel 36:25; Titus 2:14; Hebrews 1:3; I Peter 1:22-23; II Peter 1:9; Hebrews 9:14; I John 1:7; Titus 3:5; Hebrews 10:22; I Corinthians 6:11; Ephesians 5:26-27)  Zechariah 3:7 shows Joshua the importance of obedience to God for the one that Christ is advocating on behalf.

Dear Patrick,

I mistakenly wrote my response to Lori Bolinger's post and addressed it to Theo102.  Just saying.  Will be more careful next time.  I'm sorry Lori and Theo!

The Tempter…

No study of the schemes of Satan would be complete without a look at the temptations of Christ in the wilderness.  Imagine the boldness of Satan to come and tempt the Christ, God Himself clothed in flesh.  I think this tells us something about the frailty of the flesh when it comes to righteousness.  (Matthew 26:41; Mark 14:38; Mark 14:32-42; I Corinthians 1:25; II Corinthians 13:4; II Corinthians 12:10; II Corinthians 13:9; Philippians 2:6-8)  Man is unable to withstand the schemes of Satan without the power of the indwelling Holy Spirit.
Before we get into the actual temptations notice that this is the second time in this study that we see that God Himself gave Satan permission.  In this case, God led Jesus to the wilderness so that He could be tempted.  This temptation was important to His ministry to us in that it shows us both His God nature and the power of the indwelling Holy Spirit that every believer is given at the point of belief unto salvation.  God does many things we can’t understand.  The first things we have to understand is that God is sovereign even over where we go and what we endure.  (Psalms 115:3; Proverbs 16:9; Psalms 37:23; Proverbs 19:21; Proverbs 20:24; Jeremiah 10:23; Psalms 18:19; Psalms 25:12; Psalms 37:31; Psalms 40:2; Psalms 33:10)  The difficult part is trusting God (Proverbs 3:5-6) The things that God leads us to or gives permission to happen to us are not intended to bring you harm but rather to bring about good. (Genesis 45:5-7; Genesis 50:19-20; Romans 8:28; Romans 11:29; II Corinthians 4:15) What God allows into your life He also gives you the power to overcome.
The first challenge Satan put before Christ was that that dealt with his hunger.  He had fasted for forty days and nights.  Jesus the Christ was hungry like few of us will ever truly know and understand.  He was starving.  So Satan, knowing the weakness of the flesh told Jesus that all He had to do to end the hunger was to turn the stones into bread and eat.  He issued the challenge through claiming a form of doubt of who Christ is.  Notice what he says, “IF you are the Son of God then…”  He wanted Christ to prove who He is, to defend His identity.  The counter to doubts is faith not miracles. (Matthew 14:31; Matthew 21:21; Mark 11:23)  When we doubt whether it is God’s existence or our salvation or any number of other things the solution is not some miracle that we are tempted to claim will change our doubt to trust but rather it is to have faith that God is who He claims and that He is all that we need.  Jesus Himself answered Satan’s temptation to defend who He is by quoting scripture, “man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.”  First Christ answered the temptation of Satan by quoting scripture.  We cannot use scripture against the schemes of Satan unless we first know scripture intimately.  This knowing of scripture in a way that allows us to own it and use it comes in three main forms.  We need to study it so that we understand it and it cannot be twisted into things it does not say.  Second we need to meditate on it.  This meditation is to always be thinking about it.  Third we need to memorize the word of God, hide it in our hearts so that when temptations come we have ammunition to use.  (II Timothy 2:16-17; Ezra 7:10; Psalms 119: 11-12; Psalms 119:15-16; Psalms 119:47-48; Psalms 119:96-98; Psalms 37:31; Romans 15:4; Hebrews 4:12; Joshua 1:8; Ephesians 6:17; Proverbs 4:10-13; Acts 17:11)
Christ then tells Satan that man does not live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.  He understood that real life is found in the spirit not in the flesh.  His perspective was one of the eternal nature of man not the temporal.  Kind of like the idea that if you give a man a fish he will eat for a day but if you teach him to fish he will eat for a lifetime.  Likewise Christ understood that if He turned the stones into bread He could eat for the moment but if He set His focus on God He could eat for eternity.  Scripture talks a lot about food, we are to feed and clothe others, we are not to worry about where our next meal is coming from, but also, we are blessed when we imitate Christ and focus on the eternal not the temporal. Matthew 25:35-40; Deuteronomy 8:3; Psalms 34:10; Matthew 15; Luke 1:53; Luke 6:21-25; John 6:35; John 6:48; John 6:50-53; Matthew 5:6)
The second temptation Satan put before Christ was one that used Scripture.  He told Jesus that if He was truly God’s Son than He should prove it by throwing Himself down for Scripture says that the angels would keep Him safe.  This again makes knowing scripture, meditating on it and memorizing it important but equally important is the need to know what it is saying in both context and intent.  When we add to scripture what is not there or take from it what is there we are partaking in one of the schemes Satan uses to mislead people into death.  (Revelations 22:18-19; Deuteronomy 4:2; Proverbs 30:5-6; Deuteronomy 12:32; Mark 7:13) Twisting God’s words is not a new scheme of Satan though we might like to think it is a modern day problem.  He did the same thing all the way back in Genesis 3:1-4 when he tempted Eve to eat of the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.  So Jesus, being wise in scripture and their meaning reminded Satan that it is not for us to test or some translations say tempt God.  God can be trusted and what He says He will do.  The goal is not to test God to see if He is true but to trust God that He is in fact faithful to all that He says He is.  Notice in the following verses that others have tried to test God by questioning the ease of the yoke He asks us to bear, His presence in our lives, by asking for desires over needs, asking Him to prove who He is, and disobedience.  (Exodus 17:2; Deuteronomy 6:16; Luke 4:12; Acts 15:10; Exodus 17:7; Psalms 78:18; I Corinthians 10:9; Psalms 78:41; Psalms 78:56; Psalms 95:9; Psalms 106:14)  Often we go through life and expect everything to be butterflies and roses when in fact, that attitude is a test of God’s goodness and is sinful.  We are to be watchful and on guard and aware that we will be tempted and challenged and danger will come our way.
Finally Satan tempted Christ with power.  He did so by using his own desire to be worshiped.  Satan offered Jesus the world if only He would denounce God and worship Satan.  Satan often uses our desire for power and authority as a means of drawing us to worship something or someone over the Living God.  (Deuteronomy 6:13; Luke 4:8; Exodus 34:14; Deuteronomy 6:13-14; Exodus 20:5; Deuteronomy 4:24) It isn’t just that we are not to test God but we are to worship only God. (Deuteronomy 6:13; Luke 4:8; Exodus 34:14; Deuteronomy 6:13-14; Exodus 20:5; Deuteronomy 4:24) Even Ecclesiastes 12:13 tells us that the whole thing boils down to worship of God alone for this is good.  As Christ finished being tempted by the Devil and the Devil could not cause Him to fall, Satan left Him and the angels came to Him and ministered to Him.  (Matthew 4:11)  Even when we are unaware of their presence, angels are ministering to us. (Hebrews 1:14; Psalms 91:11; Daniel 6:22; Psalms 34:7)

The scriptures were well known by many at the time, they knew the scriptures that Paul was referring to and therefore not plagiarism per se.

By keeping some of of the ideas and changing others (eg truth as defense to faith as defense), Paul's target audience must have been people who didn't have a detailed knowledge of Isaiah & the Psalms.

1 Corinthians 9:19-23 King James Version (KJV)

19 For though I be free from all men, yet have I made myself servant unto all, that I might gain the more.

20 And unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to them that are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain them that are under the law;

21 To them that are without law, as without law, (being not without law to God, but under the law to Christ,) that I might gain them that are without law.

22 To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.

23 And this I do for the gospel's sake, that I might be partaker thereof with you.

This one seems to way too often be seen in our lives...one we should all be aware of....

Separate Us From the Word…
As we look at the parable of the sower found in Matthew 4, Mark 4, and Luke 8 we see that one of the schemes of Satan is to separate us from the Word that had been sown into our hearts.  (Mark 4:15)  This prevents the seed from sprouting and taking root so that it can grow and mature us spiritually.  I think it is important that we do not try to accuse Satan of things that he does not do.  For example, he cannot force us to sin, he can only tempt us.  Some years ago there was a saying going around that “Satan made me do it.”  There is nothing in scripture to indicate that Satan has that much power.  Even in the parable of the sower we do NOT see pressures of life, persecutions, worries, greed, and evil desires being attributed to Satan.  Those things are part of the world we live in.  Satan can use them to entice us as we saw in Chronicles but that is a limit of his power.  We are responsible for our own decisions.  Notice in Genesis 3:11-13 Eve says that she was deceived by the serpent.  It was she who was deceived not Satan who forced her to sin.  Struggles in life are inevitable, not all those struggles are caused by Satan. (I Peter 4:12;John 16:33; I Peter 1:6; I Peter 2:11; I Peter 3:17; I Peter 5:10)  We can do the will of Satan by giving in to his schemes rather than standing against them.  (John 8:44; I John 3:8-10; Acts 13:10; Matthew 13:24-30 and Matthew 13:36-43; Galatians 5:1; I Corinthians 16:13; Luke 21:19; II Corinthians 1:24; Proverbs 12:3; Matthew 10:22; James 1:24; I Peter 5:9; James 4:7; Ephesians 6:10-14: Ephesians 4:27; I Peter 5:8-9)  We combat this in our own lives by standing firm on the Word of God. (James 1:12; James 1:2-4; John 16:33; Romans 5:3-5)
Where we need to stand firm on the Word of God and be sober minded and watchful to prevent Satan from separating us from the word.  Where we need to hide the word of God in our hearts through memorization of the scripture, meditating on the scriptures and studying the scriptures on a regular basis, the parable of the sower talks about how Satan takes the word from those who have not yet had the word of God take root in their lives.  The believer can help avoid this as well by continuing to sow the word of God.  We need to be diligent about sharing the gospel message to all who will hear. (Romans 10:14-15; John 9:36; Acts 8:31; Ephesians 2:17; Ephesians 4:21; Ephesians 6:15; Isaiah 40:9; Isaiah 61:1; Nahum 1:15; Isaiah 52:7; Romans 15:20; Romans 1:15; Matthew 4:19; Mark 16:15-16; Matthew 9:37-38; Romans 1:16; II Timothy 1:8)
The problem Satan has when trying to separate us from the word of God is that the very word of God is powerful and active and alive.  It accomplishes when it is given to do and washes us clean as well as convicting of sin.  It is a sword, an instruction, a correction.  The word of God is a firm step for our feet and a light to our path. (Proverbs 6:23; Hebrews 6:5; Hebrews 4:12; Jeremiah 23:29; John 12:48; Acts 7:38; John 17:17; John 15:3; Ephesians 5:26; Ephesians 6:17; II Corinthians 10:4; Hosea 6:5; Psalms 119:105; Isaiah 55:11; Matthew 24:35; Isaiah 40:8; Isaiah 45:23)  The word of God is a powerful tool in the hands of the believer both for their own protection from the Devil as well as for the unbeliever to turn away from death into life.

Some people conflate the Bible with the divine word. Devil means slanderer, to resist the devil is to resist slander. Truth is an effective defence against allegations of slander.

He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.

Bondage…
One of the schemes of Satan is to put us in bondage.  This bondage can take several forms.  In Luke 13:10-17 we see that the bondage was to a disability, a physical malformation.  This bondage had been going on for at least eighteen years.  All Jesus had to do to free the woman was say, “you are free of your disabilities.”  Then He laid His hands on her and she was restored and glorifying God.  The entire teaching is about the law of Sabbath which we should touch on since it is the context and Jesus point was that it is NOT unlawful to set someone free on the Sabbath.  It’s a teaching about the heart of the law not the letter of the law that is important when it comes to us being set free from our bondage.
So let’s talk about bondage since we are looking into the schemes of Satan.  Some of the bondage we experience is at the hand of Satan (Luke 13:10-17,  II Corinthians 4:4) but as we study bondage we discover that we are the ones who decide who we will be in bondage to.  Corruption has us in bondange in Romans 8:21.  In fact the whole world is in bondage to that corruption which is the result of sin entering the world.  This bondage is broken by the Lord Jesus Christ.
John 8:34 talks of our bondage to sin.  Anyone according to John 8:34 who commits a sin is in bondage to that sin.  Since everyone sins (Romans 3:23) we all are slaves to sin at one point or another.  John 8:32 tells us that it is the truth that sets us free from this bondage.  Genesis 4:7 tells us that we need to master sin rather than to open the door and invite it into our lives.  In Romans 6:16 we see that we are in bondage to whomever or whatever we obey, whether the evil desires within, Satan, the Christ, or anything inbetween.  If we are a slave to whomever we serve it is little wonder that we are all slaves to the sin that we serve.  II Peter 2:19 further expands on the idea of our bondage or slavery to sin by talking about we are slaves to whatever overcomes us.  When we fail to live a righteous life we are slaves to the sin that we gave ourselves over to.  Romans 6:20 tells us that when we are a slave to sin we are free from the obligations of righteousness but righteousness is the goal and therefore we need to be set free from our bondage to sin.
We already talked about the truth of Jesus Christ setting us free from our bondage to sin. (John 8:34) We also talked about Jesus being able to set us free, Jesus being the truth.  There are some other things we can do as well.  We can become a slave to Jesus, (II Corinthians 4:1-6) we can allow Christ to lift the veil and transform us into His image. (II Corinthians 3:14-18)  We can guard ourselves so that we do not give Satan a foothold in our lives. (Ephesians 4:27)  This diligence comes from resisting the Devil rather than giving into him as well as submitting ourselves to God with a yielded heart. (James 4:7; I Peter 5:9) When we think with a sober mind that is alert and watchful for the schemes of Satan and the truth of the Lord we are working towards freeing ourselves from the bondage of sin. (I Peter 5:8) As we clothe ourselves with the blood of the Lamb (Jesus Christ) and testify to His goodness, as we love God more than our own lives, we begin to set ourselves free. (Revelations 12:11)  Being set free from the bondage of sin is to wrestle against the sinful desires that reside in our hearts. (Ephesians 6:12) When it is not clear, when we don’t know if we are being deceived or not we can test the spirits to see if they are from God and if they are speaking truth. (I John 4:1) Finally we need to put on the full armor of God.  The full armor of God is often taught but let’s take a moment to look at what it tells us to do to not fall to the bondage of sin and the schemes of Satan.  First we are to be strong in the Lord and in His power.  (II Corinthians 12:9-10)  The battle we are waging is not one of the flesh but one of the spiritual realm.  Keeping this mindset is important to our battle.  Where Satan can use our fleshly weaknesses as he did with Jesus when he tempted Him, the battle was one (Ephesians 6:12; Acts 26:17-18; I Corinthians 9:25; Ephesians 2:2; Ephesians 3:10)  With the full armor of God we can and need to stand firm in His power and strength.  That armor includes the truth that we talked about above, righteousness, being ready in peace, faith, salvation, the Spirit which is the very Word of God, and being alert and praying.  Matthew 12:25-27 shows us why we cannot be set free from our bondage by the things of Satan but only by the truth of the Lord Jesus Christ as He washes over us and sets us free, for then we will be free indeed.  (John 8:36)
As we talk about bondage let us also talk about demon possession.  Demon possession is a real thing in scripture.  We are given several accounts of just such a phenomena.  Luke 22:3 and John 13:27 talk about how Satan entered into Judas Iscariot which led the way for him to betray Jesus.  These passages show us a specific moments when the person became possessed.  Acts 16:16-18 tells the story of a woman who was demon possessed and because of the possession she had the gift of divination, that is she could tell the future so that her masters could have great gain.  The demon saw cast out in the name of Jesus.  Mark 5:1-20 tells of a demon possessed man who had been given by the demons great strength, that is super human strength.  What I found extremely interesting is that in verse 6 even though the man is demon possessed he worships Jesus the Christ.  Possession does not prevent us from coming to God.  As we move through the story, Jesus cast out the demons by casting them into a herd of pigs who promptly ran over a cliff unto their deaths.  Luke 4:33-36 tells of a man who was demon possessed and still cried out to Jesus who cast out the demon and the man was not hurt.  This is twice that we notice that being possessed does not stop us from seeking out Christ and the healing that He brings.
Sometimes it is the person who is possessed that calls out and at other times someone brings them.  In Matthew 17:14-21 a man brings his son, a son who was having seizures that were caused by the demon within him.  This does not mean that all seizures are caused by demons anymore than all strength is demonic what it means is that demons can cause deformities as we saw previously and seizures.  The disciples tried to cast out this demon but couldn’t because they didn’t have enough faith.  Jesus cast out the demon and said that this type of demon can only be cast out through prayer and fasting.  Demons made a man blind and dumb in Matthew 12:22 and again the man was brought by his friends to Jesus for deliverance.  Even Matthew 4:24 talks about those who were brought for healing and were healed of even demonic possession.
This is obviously not a full study of demonic possession and I would recommend that no one seeks out demon possessed people to exercise the demons out of but it is also not something we should fear as we move through our lives in Christ and something we should be aware of that Satan can and does do to send people to their deaths but Christ is the power that overcomes even this.  It is through authority, prayer, and fasting that we overcome this type of scheme of Satan’s to pull us into death and away from life.
